Random Power Loss on my `93 W250

i was wondering what peoples thoughts are on remote start with these diesels? i got one for my gas ramcharger and it has been great but now a friend of mine is kind of wanting one for his 91 w250 diesel and i have seen a few for sale that should with with his truck. my only concern would be with the grid heater possibly causing issues with the virtual tach. anyone know much about that? i know on a couple occasions on my RC the starter has engaged when the voltage took a good drop while engine was running which taught me to turn the remote start off before turning everything on but on a diesel i know the grid heaters usually keep cycling on and off for a couple minutes after start up until warm and not needed. i was thinking at pointing him at a Pro Start brand one just like i have but before getting his hopes up i wouldn't mind trying to sort out the bugs before taking on the job or just screwing up something on his truck. we have spent enough time fixing stuff on his truck already without creating more issues. nearly a brand new truck at this point. thanks in advance

well i know if i hooked it up it would work. the only issue is the truck don't have a crank signal of any sort to tap into to let the remote starter know the engine is running. that means the remote starter is going to rely on the virtual tach which goes off voltage which would most likely grind the starter every time the grid heaters cycle. i think i might have a solution tho. if i install a starter kill relay that is activated every time the grid heaters are cycled then that should keep the starter from activating after the truck is already running.

this is the remote start i am installing for him

If you had it plugged in I suppose you could just plug it into the pump hot wire that has 12 volts to it although IDF look at a wiring book for a gen 4 and see how they do it

i don't see how looking at a gen 4 or any newer truck would make a difference? i am pretty sure all newer trucks usually have a crank signal of some sort which is the only issue i was not sure the best way to deal with. as far as wiring it so that the truck actually starts is easy. i can hotwire any stock 1st gen in my sleep. i think i got my solution. not exactly how i would have liked it but it should work and keep the truck from grinding the starter when the grid heaters cycle

Not all trucks have a crank signal on them ,the 89 and 90 did not I'd look at the newer trucks wiring because they have it ASD as option that's why simpler method f you want the truck warm in the morning plug it in and you will keep the engine warm

i would guess most newer trucks have signals of some sort that you could get a tach signal from. i don't see why you say i got to look at newer truck wiring. i am working on a 91. it don't have a asd relay and there is really no point in adding one. it would not solve any of the issues i would have installing the remote starter in a diesel truck. plugging the block heater in does not heat up the cab and you would still have to go out in the freezing cold to go start the truck and the grid heaters would still want to cycle on and off until the temp sensor decides the engine is warm enough.

I asked thevfreind of mine whom head a 2006 with a remote start on it ,itvwas not a OEM it was a dealer installed option from Minnesota so you might vcall a dealer in Minnesota and ask the trick and he does have problems with it and he bought it used from the original power ,his nephew I guess a 12 volt heatetr would heat up the cab

i hate to sound like an as$hole but you have really been no help at all. you keep talking about newer truck and i am working on a 91 which is why i posted in the first gen section. the trucks are completely different. i was really hoping to possibly find someone who has installed one on a first gen to know how they dealt with no crank signal but seems like i must be one of the first people to install a remote start in a 1st gen diesel. if mods want to delete the thread go ahead. no valuable info will be lost unless someone understand what i was talking about.

the tact sensor on a the first gens are not a hard thing to install, you could get a sensor install it on the truck and use it for the remote start.

If you do get it working please post what all you did as I have thought about trying a remote starter myself.

getting it working was easy. pretty much just hooked it up and set it to diesel mode and it worked as is. i added a relay on the on the remote starters start wire so that when the grid heaters are on the remote starter can not engage the starter. so far i have not been told of any issues but the weather has not been that cold lately. also i didn't use the wait to start wire. when i did try using it the truck would not start

I know it's a totally different truck but I installed a remote start on my 2006 Ford F350 Diesel
The compustar brand has a timer that will delay the remote start to allow for the grid heater (glow plugs in my case). There are also several different ways to get a tach signal on the compustar remote start. The easiest might be gitting a signal from the alternator.
I did a lot of resurch before I bought my remote start. Compustar was the only brand that gives the consumer instalation instructions. The one I have also has a turbo timmer that keep the engine running after the key is turned off.
There is as a website that will give you wire colors and locations on the truck for installing the kit.
