Since everyone was so helpful on the last question, I figured I'd go a little further out there, and ask this stupid question:

Is there any way to use a remote starter kit
for the Ram?

The only possible issues I can see are:
The delay needed for the grid heater,
and not physically being there to watch the oil pressure guage on startup.

Are there ways around the grid heater issues, such as a startup delay timeout?

If this is really stupid, please feel free to pipe up and say so... I got a thick head so I won't feel it too much. #ad

Thanks.

Actually you can put a Remote Start system on our trucks. The only catch is that there is a big controversy about installing them on trucks with a manual transmission. If you have an Auto... no prob, yes it can be done. The remote starter systems do have an adjustable start delay so that the grid heaters are not affected. l

Just thought I would give you my $. 02

Sorry so long.

Yes there are different brands of remote starters for our TD trucks. When shopping you must make sure that the unit you are looking at is "diesel compatible. " This compability will either be a time delay before starting the truck (Code Alam Models, 15 seconds) or will integrate with the wait to start light and start the truck after the light has gone off (Viper/DEI).

There are certainly others but these are the two I am most familiar with. I recently purchased a Code Alarm Sure Start LX which is a remote starter and an alarm system. I figured while I am at it wiring an alarm is not that much more work and is worth the extra effort. I wasn't really fond of Code Alarms "delay" method vs. the "wait to start off" method, but I've been timing my wait to start light and it's never more than 12-14 sec (6 degrees last night, truck unplugged).

I've used Code Alarm Products in the past and have been very happy with them. I have also used the Viper/DEI products and was happy with them as well, but the price was better on the Code Alarm and I think the installation is easier.

Being a newbie I'n not sure posting pricing goes, so I'll post some approx. prices. My friend had a DEI 552t (Remote Start/Keyless Entry, needs extra module for diesel) installed on his truck charged him around $250. I've seen the Code Alarm Sure Start LX (alarm/remote start/keyless entry) on the net for $200-$250 uninstalled, I paid less for mine. Not sure what the Viper 550 ESP (alarm/remtote start/keyless) goes for, but I think you can only but it from an authorized dealer and they have to install it.

Keep in mind that it is not a good idea to idle the truck for extended periods of time, especially when cold. In my opinion a remote starter is a great idea to get the oil flowing before you head out there to get in the truck. Also like the idea I can run into Wally World for a few and take the keys out of the truck and leave it running.

Hope this helps,
Ryan

Thanks guys.
Yeah, that's exactly what I had in mind.
I was thinking of installing an alarm, and figured, why not try to put in a remote start system.

Thanks for the input. #ad

I have a viper remote starter. Works good. They are already rigged up to work with diesels. Don't let them tell you that you need a seperate relay for the manifold heater. I got gouged an extra $50 dollars by a "friend" to hook up a diesel. Talking to the kid doing the install, he said all he hooked up was one wire to the wait to start light or maybe the pre-heater, I'm not sure but the other one was to the tach and that is it. Two extra wires for $50 #ad
