Guys, I'm new to the Register so I thought I'd ask the experts some questions.

Is it ok to remove the cat and replace it with a peice of straight pipe? I was wandering if it would screw anything up. I've seen other people use the "Dodge test pipe" and was wondering why you wouldn't just replace it with straight pipe. I'd like to replace the whole exhaust but can't right now.

Also, how do you tell if the injector plate is at the stock setting or if it's been modified or changed? The dealer told me that the guys who owned it before me had changed it but I didn't go into detail with him.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

There is no cat

There is no cat on the 12V rams but maybe there is? I've heard that somewhere  on the 24V's it is a resonator you would see. I don't think deisels can run calalytic converters due to ide temps being too low that would swing efficiency into the red and would not "catalize" a thing and that's why they litter americas highways. Heck my neighbor found one in his mailbox along with the Sunday paper. Maybee it's a conspiracy or Military covert opp gone wrong maybe I 'm wrong? 12 v guys?

P. S I kinda think its strange about the dealer ... . "Forewarning" about the plate  there's that conspiracy thing again ;)

the first few months of the 94 model year had no cats, after that all 12v had cats. It is a federal epa criminal violation to remove one. That said: I think most are loose and fall off on the side of the road somewhere, the guts have been known to dissolve and others get run over ( killed ) or lost while chasing prarrie dogs. I think the mufflers meet the same fate. A lot of owners that this happens too opt to put pipe of some sort on to keep the truck from catching fire due to the hot exhaust catching the floor insulation and carpet on fire; This is a temporary emergency repair that is properly replaced ( taken care of ) after the truck is sold.  :D

It would help if you posted a truck bio<small>(graphy)</font>. We wouldn't have to guess that you have a late 94 to early 98.

Removing a catalytic converter and replacing it with a &quot;test pipe&quot; to see if it is plugged, defective, or otherwise impeding performance is perfectly acceptable by Federal Law. Now permanently replacing that diesel strangling device with a free breathing straight pipe is <em>technically</em>against the law. <small>If you catch my drift. </font>

I think you have to physically remove the fuel plate to see if it is a non stock unit. Ask your dealer why they feel it is not stock and report back here.

Welcome to the TDR!

Shooter, I've noticed that my muffler and Cat had the same problem. 22K miles after I bought the truck the damn things just fell off. Highway robbery I tell you. 30K for a truck and they can't even get the emissions equip. to stay on. I think DC should issue a recall... ;)

Sorry about the lack of information. Mine is a 96 4x4 so I'm assuming that it's a cat that's just in front of the muffler and not a resonator. It's got 102k on it and am pretty it's not good for anything but plugging my exhaust.

John E. : I'll work on the bio.

Truck Inspection

I was doing an inspection under my truck and the muffler and cat fell off lucky I had a 6 foot X 3 inch pipe handy it fit in and I payed $30 for that old pipe. Truck only had 5. 000 miles on it must have been a bad muffler and cat. :D :D :D

Cliff

P. S. the truck runs better now, the cat and muffler must be to heavy.
