OK. I have to move my bed up a few inches to facilitate removal of a large piece of metal that mounts on the outside of one frame rail across to the other. The plate is for mounting a 5er attachment. I have to install FireStone Airbags. So this plate has to be removed to be able to mount the bags directly to a smooth, even frame rail. How do I loosen the bed and raise it?

Just remove the six bolts that hold down the bed, the fuel fill tube and any electrical that looks like it may go tight when you lift the bed. You have the choice of using a floor jack with a 2x6 on top to protect your paint, raise one corner at a time then block it, or you can center the bed under a beam or strong branch(I've heard of guys using their kid's swing sets also!) with tie down straps to each of the four tie downs then lift it with a come-a-long or hoist. The advantage of the last method is you can drive out from under the bed (disconnect wires) if you need more room to work. Beware not to jack on the plastic fenders if you go that route.

Don't forget to do something about the mechanism that lowers your spare tire, there is a pipe that comes off it and fits in to the bed. It will bend if you raise the bed without addressing it first #ad
