Dealer says I can add an external pump any time without removing the in tank. Just disconnect the power and transfer to the external pump. Anyone tried this?

Yes. . you can add an external pump and it will suck fuel right through the in-tank. I left my in-tank hooked up and use it as a boost pump to the external pump. Plenty of pressure running these two in series!

Dealer installed the in tank pump about a year ago. Recently bought a pressure guage and vulcan kit and pusher pump. At the VP pressure was 8psi, wth throttle would drop to 5psi. Added the pusher and changed the filter (old one only had 2000 miles on it ) and pressure went to 20psi and stays with throtle. Both pumps are fused independent, pull the pusher fuse psi drops to 6. plug it in-22. pull the in tank fuse psi drops to 0. Doesn't look like I can pull thru the in tank pump. Added light and 3. 5psi switch.

Hmmmm... . mine held about 10-12psi with the in-tank pump off. I don't like running it that way as it sounds rough. . like it's cavitating. . but it did run.

Anyway, the two together do put out nice steady pressure.

Just ran a test with an in-tank module sitting here on the bench. I can suck air through it but there's real resistance there. Can't imagine have an external pump trying to draw fuel up through this resistance... not without cavitating that is.

Going to have to come up with a plan 'B" in case things go south while on the road. my Carter pump will pull fuel through the in-tank, as stated, but it would live a very short life.

I've noticed there's a return line and an aux return line. i'm rigging up soom 3/4" lines with JIC fittings that will go from the fuel module to the LP when/if the in-tank pump die's. This, at least, would be an easy pull for the Carter using either the return line or aux as the main supply.

I'll take a photo. . it looks fairly simple.
