If I remeber correctly about California laws. . I *THINK* your turbo qualifies as a muffling device, and therefore no other noise reducing equipment is needed.

With only the silencer ring removed, the Turbo sings only above 10PSI.

If you remove the snorkel you can hear the turbo kinda growl with any boost probably 2-3PSI till 10-11PSI above 11-12PSI the low pitch turbo sound disappears and the high pitch turbo whine comes back as normal.

The low boost sound is very calm, I like it, you have to have the radio off to be able to hear it, any other noise in the cab cancels out the low boost turbo noise. (My experiance)

Sliencer ring removed problems

Hey JES, Just removed mine Saturday and the air box snorkel, funny I have the same problems you do:D I'm sure I'll be in for more when the wife notices:eek: I'll see how long "Gee honey I don't know, it just started getting louder all by itself;) " works.

I had my silencer ring out for almost a year.

I didn't mind the additional 'music' around town, but pulling my trailer for 8 hours straight convinced me to put it back in.

The noise was unbearable after two hours.

Hey David,

Same here. I love the music around town, but on the highway, or pulling, it gets annoying and frustrating.

That's why my silencer ring, silencer retaining ring, and two screwdrivers are inside of my glovebox at all times.

rings 'n things

after reading some of this give and take, it's not lookin real good for my silencer ring and turbo snorkel--i'm guessing that by this time tomorrow they'll be gathering dust in the shop rather than under my hood. if they fall off, can the resonator and muffler be far behind???? I DON'T THINK SO!!! i've got a problem tho-----when we bought the truck, DC had a special $400 discount for recent college grads. my so had just gotten a new degree, what th' heck, why not??? the truck had to be titled in HER name. she's kinda touchy about what i do to HER truck!!!!! oh well if she gets fussy, i'll just take the mufflers off MY Q45 that i let HER drive!!! seriously, after not planning to do much to th' new truck, i'm beginning to be sorry i found you renegades. now i'm itching to take things off, add things. and in general rearrange things. i sure hope it isn't the 7 year itch. i have a feeling having the slush box will keep me from going nuts, however. somebody help me scratch... ... ...

Add a KN RE0880. Then your truck will sound like a jet engine taking off. And the turbo whine when you let off the peddle is also very cool! My wife hates it but dats tooooo bad, its mine, mine all mine ... ... . muuuuhaaaaaaaaaa!

Install the JRE 4" exhaust and you'll *really* hear the turbo. My '98 is generally quiet under normal driving, but when I mash the go pedal to the floor, it gets rather *loud* outside. It can be almost deafening inside tunnels. :) I'm surprised no cops came running when I drove over Read Mt. with 2 tons of gravel in the bed. (It's a no-trucks road. )

And when I let up on the go pedal, the turbo is real loud as it winds down.

I love it! And my mileage is slowly creeping up even more. After installing the JRE, the mileage seemed to go up 0. 5 MPG.

silencing rings

iwas right!!! iwas right!!! the ring and snorkel didn't make it through the night. they're in the shop locked up and the alarm set, so that noone will steal them overnite!!! sure sounds cool--can't wait for the ride into town in the am. btw#1: has any body tried putting a 4" turndown where the muffler starts and leaving the rest of the tailpipe off? lots of medium duty trucks dump the exhaust under the truck like that. btw#2: does anybody know how much of the exhaust system has to be removed to drown out those d*** rolling overseas stereos with 200 amp alternators driving 1000 watts of rap music that invariably are beside me at every stoplight??????... ... ... . maybe remove every thing from the downpipe back???? sure would like to drown out one of those mothers and the leave him sitting a big cloud of diesel smoke... ... . :D :D :D

btw#3: when taking the silencer ring out, check for aluminum filings after removing the snap ring. a few tiny pieces of aluminum from the turbo housing came out easily with a towell and some wd45:cool:
