Well, my wife didn't like the noise of the AFE mege cannon (it was loud) so I pulled it along with the TAG. Here's what I noticed after three months of running these two.

I picked up about 1 mpg when towing with this combo. It seems like if you're hauling a load (i. e. you're pouring the fuel to it) the extra air-flow helps out. It also had a little more mid-range zip... . not much. . but a little. The bottom end seemed to suffer though. I use to impress people with the ability to launch the truck from a dead stop in third gear... . at an idle. If you where real smooth with the clutch it wouldn't even stumble.

With the TAG and AFE it would almost stall if I tried that. I don't know if there was too much air for the amount of fuel or what. it just didn't want to take off in third gear.

After removing the dynamic duo I can take off in third again. I don't do this very often but the point is that bottom end torque is back with the stock filter and no TAG.

It takes all of 15 minutes to change these two items out so I guess when we're ready to tow again I'l put them back on. Just thought it was interesting how the added air flow effected the performance of the Cummins. Looks like those engineers do their homework before putting something on the market.

I don't see how your wife could be bothered be turbo noise if you had a TAG

I have a Scotty II with the 4. 5" cowl hole cut and with a TAG all my turbo noise was just about drowned out by my radio.

Hmmmmm... ... that's interesting. I was thinking about taking out my TAG just to see what it would feel like now that I am used to it.

It seems that there is a huge range of disparity in our trucks! What works on one doesn't on another, and everybody reports different stats. When I switched from the stock filter to a K&N I picked up low-end torque, I would never go back to that no-flow brick the factory calls an air filter. As far as the TAG, don't have one yet, but everyone I've talked to says they really cut down or totally eliminate the turbo whine. Thats why I'm hesitant, I like a little whine with my truck!:D

The tag cut my turbo whine significantly. I was getting some serious turbo bark though, so I removed my silencer ring and that took care of the bark problem in conjunction with the tag. Even with the ring out, whine is barely noticeable. I have a BHAF and I know those are a lot quieter than most other aftermarket filters. I've tried several, so I've had the experience to make this statement.

I still have plenty of whine with my Dodgezilla and TAG. I really could not tell much noise difference between the TAG, silencer ring or no silencer ring. It all sounds almost the same. What does make a difference is there is a lot less turbo bark if you don't run with a silencer ring. Everyone says that with a TAG the lower boost numbers are good. I am not so sure. When you change out the stock filter for an AFE or such you usually pick up boost and everyone seems to think that is good. Seems that less restriction equals more boost. I lost 2lbs of boost with the TAG. Something to think about.

Lower boost with TAG

Ramafid,

Lower boost pressure using the TAG is usually related to a steady load condition which indicates less boost is needed to do the same work, therefor a benefit. Many using the TAG also report quicker turbo spool up and a slight increase in WOT boost pressures. Keep im ind that results do vary from truck to truck, but if you are seeing lower boost pressures on the highway and or lower EGTs the TAG is doing something for you, much like a larger air intake does. I hope this helps explain why lower boost pressures can be a good thing.

A quick follow-up

When I first purchased the TAG it was installed with the stock air filter. I tried real hard to feel the difference in performance... but there was none... . couldn't hear anything or feel anything different.

When the AFE was put on, I noticed the difference instantly. Like I said before it had more zip in the mid-range and the sound (noise) was noticeable... not a turbine whine... but a deep rumble. The TAG did nothing to help with that rumble with-in the cab.

My wife hated the added noise and my son-in-law loved it (why didn't I just listen to him?). Really though... it was annoying. Going down the highway in cruise, not too bad. Sitting at a stop light... a real pain.

If I were going to put in bigger injectors I would certainly want the AFE or some other high-flow filter. The combination of extra fuel and increased air flow would be nice. As this truck is running great right now, I'm reluctant to make any big changes. The little add-ons (TAG, etc. ) however, are fun and can be replaced pretty easy.
