Installed Wix BHAF a couple weeks ago. Thought it was great until I started blowing BLACK smoke out the tail pipe. Found out I wasn't getting enough air for the engine. So, I removed the filter and put the OEM back on with a K&N filter. More pep and less black smoke with the OEM Filter housing. Now I hear the turbine and that's sweet music to my ears. With the WIX BHAF, the turbine was silent, too silent and just didn't have the power.

So who has a better filter system. I have Jason Boesl's BHAF mount and want to add another filter onto it. Help me out.

Thanks,

Blair:{

Just my experience

but I get almost no smoke with comp on 5/5 and I get a real nice turbo sound.

Sorry your didn't work out. doesnt' sound right IMO.

BHAF

MIne has been great flows air like crazy I am totally stock fueling wise- no smoke- I do not understand your problem unless the filter had a problem- mine is a Fleetguard BHAF- great low cost mod IMHO.

I think I'll try the Fleetguard filter. I don't understand why it would smoke either. Everything is stock until the warranty runs dry and then it's time to BOMB.

BHAFs not all created equal

Quite awhile ago when all this BHAF discussion started I did some checking and found out the Fleetguard BHAF does flow better than the Wix and Napa counterparts. I think a lot of guys ran out and bought whatever brand they wanted not realizing they are not all created equal. If it wasn't such a pain I'd dig up the info that was posted but there are more "BHAF" threads than you can shake a stick at :(

So far mine is doing well. Haven't been on the road to check milage but the egt's come down real quick to shut off the engine. .

I have been running the napa gold [wix] for 2 months now. I just finished a 1801 mile trip. The truck stayed at approx 700 degree at 80mph, through ok,kansas, co, i beleive it is running 100 degrees cooler then with a stock box. While passing or hard runs up mountains it would go to 950 or so then back to 650 700. I am pleased, and i believe it spools alittle faster ago. JMI

Napa 2790 $39 or $42 forgot which

fleetguard AH19037 $38

Cummins 3924541 $??

Donaldson ECB15006 $34

Balwin PA2820 $27

Wix #42790

Thanks for the post on part numbers for the alternate filters. I have been running all day with the stock box and K&N and no smoke. So something was wrong. I'll purchase the Fleetguard and reinstall Jason Boesl's bracket. I'll try something different. Anyone want a slightly used filter??

Blair;)

Lordsman,

No it does not fit. You need to remove the box. This is very simple, just 4 bolts at the bottom of the box.

If you want to put in a BHAF, I recomend a Mallory mount from Jason Bosel. Many of us have them and I haven't heard any complaints. The Mallory mount holds it in place and has a heat shield between the filter and the turbo so that you don't suck in so much heat from the turbo.

Pic of BHAF, no mount

I dropped almost 100 degrees by removing the stock box/fleetguard,and putting in a Wix 42790,and im at 400+hp. My turbo sings louder now than ever.

I get great airflow with no bhaf. I use the stock box and a K@N filter. A few weeks ago one of the other members said he took a 1 inch hole saw and drilled holes on the lower half of the stock box, 2 holes on each of the 3 exposed sides. I did this also and my turbo sings like crazy and air flow is superb. I wish i could remember who posted that idea so I could give them credit for it. But anyway you might want to try it. It's a free mod and it yields great results. :D

bad filter?

We use Nelson (a Fleetguard company) air cans & filters in all our Cummins C series and Detroit Series 40 and 50 powerplants. Very rarely. but we do get new filters that will suck the filter minder inside out (OK exaggerating, but you get the point?) and really starve the engines for air. Mostly it appears to be excess resin binder in the filter media. One can see it by comparing to another filter. The over resined will be slightly darker.

I got a Fleetguard BHAF from my local branch for $33 plus tax. That is street price, too. It sure beats the stock filter IMHO

Blair, is there anyone who can help you out by trying your WIX filter on another truck or something. I don't recall another post like this one. You could maybe get your money back.

Did you read my post a couple days back? I just installed one, a Donaldson, I think, and promptly blocked off over half the air filter and it continued to deliver more air than I needed with 300 HP. Something is wrong.

My $. 02 is that the BHAF is the way to go if youare running stock or mild bomb. I found that all the time I used to spend letting EGT cool is now greatly reduced with the BHAF. Most of the time I can shut down at or below 300 degrees when I arrive at my destination. The cost of this mod is low and install is as easy as it can get.

I am one of those who does not really enjoy the turbo whistle, but the next change that I am going to make is to straight pipe my truck.

BHAF will drop EGT's. Not as noticable mt as it is pulling. When I go, I am usually within a 1000 or so pounds of CGVWR and I am bvery happy with the Fleetgaurd filter. JMO

Somethings wrong

I've had my Wix version of the BHAF in since my last oil change. Before that I was using the K+N RE0880 in the Scotty air system. I decided to try the BHAF when the K+N started showing higher egt's and I knew it was due for a cleaning.

I think it's safe to say that I am beyond mildly BOMBed, with the step 5 injectors, Edge EZ and TST PM3 Comp. box, along with the HX40 turbo.

Without beating a dead horse, I found that my egt's lowered about 100F from the NEW K+N RE0880, using the WIX 42790. I have no more black smoke than I did with the K+N filter. The Wix filter is a good alternative IMHO, atleast for cold weather operation. I'll see how it does in the dog days of summer once it gets hot.
