Anyone got a tip for getting the drums off, several raps with a hammer and prying didn't budge them. I don't have a puller that big or yet shall I say.

Sometimes rust locks them on where the drum slides over the axel hub. put some penetrant on them and back off the self adjusters.

Unless your brakes are dragging loosening the adjusters won't help, the drums are just rusted on. Sometimes there are round clips on the studs to hold the drum to the hub, remove and discard, they are just there to keep things together during assembly. Easy way - jack the entire rear, remove both tires, start the truck and slam on the brakes in forward and reverse, they will come right off. For safety's sake use jack stands and leave one lug nut on loosely to keep the drums from rolling down the street. Hard way - beat on the drum face with a sledge hammer.

To add to Illflem's idea, I just did the brake cylinders and I backed my brakes all the way off and did the brake slam in forward and reverse and the drums didn't just come loose they rolled off in the floor:p

What illflem and Jim said but I put 2 lug nuts back on at opposite sides (edit) or one top and one bottom.

Easy off Drums

I just did the rear brakes on mine. A friend who is a truck driver/mechanic showed me a simple way to get the drums off. Take a inch or so diameter brass punch and a hammer. Hold the punch between the studs and give it a good whack. Do this in back and forth across the drum between the studs in the same sequence you would use to torque lug nuts. After three or four whacks off pops the drum.

drum removal

Thanks for the replays ,with the truck on the lift I tried three or four fourth gear brake slams but didn't try reverse, but will give it a try I also used a large ball pen hammer and rapped between the studs but didn't try the punch. Maybe next time I'll have better success. Thanks again. Tim
