I just did mine for the 2nd time. You got to get a screw driver under it and lift it. then file off any burrs you might put in the cover with the screwdriver.

PS: If you remove all the bolts except 2 on the sides, and on the top. Lossen the side ones about 3 turns and lossen the top one about 1 turn. Pry the cover off near the bottom slow so the oil can drain out before pulling the whole cover off. Gear oil stinks!

I get a small flathead and lightly hammer it between the pumpkin and the pumpkin cover. Once I see it go in about 1/4", I pry up on it to break the seal. Don't be shy... you can't hurt the pumpkin itself and even if you put a small groove in it, you'll be gooping on enough RTF to fill it in.

Remember the thread a few months back when someone on the board saw the Dodge Tech take all the bolts out, then bang on the cover with a sledge hammer the loosen it?

I have done both diff covers, and both PTO covers on my 6 speed transmission when I added my Fastcoolers last weekend. All covers were so tightly glued down, a screwdriver wouldn't fit, so yes, I used a putty knife. A very thin one to get it started, then a screwdriver.
