Just bought a 2016 a couple months ago and really hate the DEF. I wanted to see if anyone has removed their DEF system from the truck and what issues you have had. Or if you know of problems that might occur. I talked with a mechanic who said it could be completely
removed and would provide no issues to the engine, but I would really like to hear what experience anyone has had with this. Appreciate the input.

You just hate adding it? What is it you hate about it?

I do not know what can be done to remove the system AND keep the computer happy, but removing the DEF system itself will give you no performance advantage what so ever.....only advantage I can see is saving $12 or so every couple of months (depending on amount of towing)

You probably should never let that mechanic touch your truck.

Sure, it can be removed, but you must tune the truck afterwards. Get on the Cummins boards and search, search, search. Then get out your wallet. Then throw your warranty away.

It is easy to make a case for deleting 07.5 to 2012 trucks. Forcing the engine to breathe its own waste via EGR makes for poor fuel economy, frequent oil changes and other related maintenance issues. But for 2013 and on, the DEF system actually negates these issues. I would wait at least until the warranty is up before deciding whether to make any changes.

Not sure how you formed that opinion in two short months. It costs me on average $4.65 per 1,000 miles in DEF costs.

Your mechanic obviously rode the Short Bus to vo-tech school. I wouldn't let him R&R my license plate renewal decal.

Without modifying the software the truck will shut down.Modifying the software is a federal offense,How much do you hate def????

We had a hot shot truck at the shop picking up a tractor. He said he had 5 trucks running and just had it taking off a 2015 for 2 grand and it was worth it. He has a new one on order and he was going to have it done to that one also. Myself I don't see it being a good idea, these trucks cost to munch money to void a warranty. And you give them 1/2 a reason and it is gone.

The DEF system is an aftertreatment system - it only does its thing to reduce NOx in the exhaust stream after the exhaust flow has left the engine. I can't see how deleting the DEF system is going to do squat in and of itself to improve engine performance (as if the 385/900 Cummins in my truck needed help in that regard.) To me, it certainly isn't worth voiding the warranty, dropping the resale value of the truck, risking fines and emissions inspection failures, etc., but to each his own....

I just returned from a 4000 mile trip towing our 19,000 GVWR 5th wheel. The only "inconvenience" the DEF system caused me was topping up the DEF tank twice (when it got down to 1/2 full) at the Pilot/Flying J while I was refueling. Cost - maybe $10. Big deal for the improvements in performance, oil change intervals, etc. it makes over my previous 2011 Ram.

When I first moved to Florida 23 1/2 years ago, the state had annual required emissions tests for all vehicles. You had to make a trip to the emissions test station before you could renew your registration. They have done away with that. But i suspect they will bring it back. The feds might even hold hwy $ hostage from states that don't implement required emissions testing. I don't recommend doing that.

Deleting is a popular procedure on forum B, and will most likely be your best source for information. I'm all for deleting the 07.5 - 2012 trucks, but I honestly can't find any reason to delete the Urea trucks. Mine has run flawlessly for 15K miles, and I've only used a total of 5 gallons of Urea.

I have to agree with most here!
I have a 2013 3500 CCSB I have put 20K towing my 3 trailers. The Urea is a NON issue The Truck tows great pulls amazing and it is ALL stock. I do not intend to do anything to this truck except push the button and drive!!

this has been a trouble free truck. love it
