Removing locking hubs

How do I remove it? A 3mm allen wrench is too small, a 4mm is too big. Same goes for a 1/8 and 5/32. I don't have anything in between and I called two buddies of mine to check their sets and the same holds true with them. Thanks guys.

You have the same problem i had with mine .



The good news is the allen screws are not a weird or speciality size .



The problem is that there is sand and crap in there and they basicly



rounded them selves out .



The fix is get a 3/16th drill bit or 1/4" drill bit , one thats basicly the same size as the head and drill the head off of each one you cand get off , only the head as when its off the hub will come off . With he hub off use a vice grip to remove the screws .



You can re use your hubs there not hurt and new screws will hold the hub tight .



Make shure you use plenty of never seaze on the screws all over the screw

Thanks for that info but, I called my friend who works as a mechanic at a Ford Dealership. He told me there is a 3. 5mm and only a handful of companies offer it. Bondhus is one of them. It appears this particularly odd size is for Shimano as well as other bike parts. The problem is, I called everywhere I could think of on this island and nobody has it available. Your way is sounding pretty darn good at this point.

Did you try the other side of the truck ?



i dont have any special size allen wrenches my screws were just striped out This what im guessing your issue is as well ,if you think thats the issue

try www.snapontools.com or one of the other simular tool companys .

p. s. I went to the local hardware store and bought replacement allen screws .

Shimano makes fishing reels also. Call around for a certified Shimano repair center, they might be able to help. I have never had a problem taking those allen head bolts out, they really shouldn't be that tight.



I've also never heard of that wrench. I'm not even sure what size I use, but the correct size for me is always in one of my many sets, so it has to be pretty standard.



Maybe take the one thats too big and file the ends down a little bit to make a taper? Just a thought.

For some reason I remember something with a "9" in it being the correct size, and I had to go out and buy a new set of allen wrenches to get that size. 9/64" would fit right in the middle there, and that sounds like the size I used. It was just a little snug but there was no chance of rounding them off with it. My craftsman set of allen wrenches came with it.

Hey guys, I'll kick myself in the a** for all of you. That darn hex WAS a 9/64. I don't know why both my hex sets go from 1/8 to 5/32, which led me to believe there was no size in between and the 3mm was too small while the 4mm was too big so I thought it HAD to be a 3. 5mm. Picked up an individual socket type from NAPA this afternoon. Tippin, I wish I had read your reply earlier. Don, I was ready to drill those buggers out too. :-laf Thanks for everyone's reply.

Now you wonder just why anyone had to make a 9/64 or a 3. 5 in the first place. I HATE those oddball sizes. Just like the 5. 5mm in my 1/4" drive socket sets.
