What is the best and easiest way to get the original batteries (no straps) out without causing damage to the engine compartment, fenders and yourself?

If it were me, Id just be careful and not short the positive terminals to ground when removing them. But If I were advising someone else, I'd tell them to carefully wrap their ratchet handles and other wrenches to be used for this in electrical tape. :)

I'd remove both negative terminals, then each positive terminal and wrap each positive terminal with 3 layers of electrical tape leaving the last part of the tape folded onto itself to easily get the tape back off.

If you're fairly strong you can get them out by grasping the sides and lifting them out. I'd have a work surface of appropriate hight and stability right next to me to set them on.

If I was unfamiliar with any of this, I would head on down to the local repair shop and pay them to do it.

There not as heavy as you'd think. They're rather short and while they look normal size, once you pull them out you find they're not all that big after all - certainly not as tall as the old group 24/27.

as a side question, is there any danger to the electrical system to the vehicle if you do accidentally touch a perfect length box end wrench to each terminal?:-laf may have done that a few times...

hahaha... seen THAT done once or twice... watched an idiot put a boxed end wrench on the positive post of a duece and a half... Didn't pull the negative terminals first either. .

Welded that nice Snap-On wrench to the fender... It actually glowed for awhile before melting the terminals completely off the battery.
