The c's are reportedly forged,I have seen them both bend and break. The tubes are almost flexible :-laf but easy to weld. The center section is cast.

Follow up

Well guys, heres the follow up to my feeble attempt at removing the steering dampener shock.



After trying all the suggestions given here, I finally gave up and took it to my local garage.



$125 later, I had it back.



Even according to them, it was a bear to remove. They used heat, hammers, chisels and pneumatic tools to remove it and it took them forever.

The owner of the garage has an 04 CTD and is well acquainted with our trucks wonderful ability to rust stuff together.



They are a good garage and I don't feel gouged.



So, once again, thanks for all the suggestions and assistance. R & R of the dampener was just out of my range of tools and equipment.
