Sorry this is so long…. .

I searched the forum and was not able to locate anything pertaining to this, so here is a new one for you guys to ponder and/or be aware of…

With roughly 4000 miles on my 2011 CTD the malfunction indicator light come on. I went to the dealership, they hooked up to the ODBII, they read the code, it showed it was the exhaust oxygen sensor. It was advising that it was “stuck rich. ” When asked what this meant, I was advised that the sensor monitors the temperature and oxygen percentage (mostly the temperature) of the exhaust. The example I was given was “when the exhaust temperature goes below the pre-set value (approx 200*) while driving, it will throw the code. The best chance of this happening is when your foot is off the accelerator for more than 10 seconds and you are coasting. ” Confused? So was I…. But lucky for me they had the sensor in stock and I was out the door in 30 minutes.

At roughly 4800 miles the light came back on again. Same thing happen, took my truck to the dealer, they hooked up to the ODBII, code read, exhaust oxygen sensor “stuck rich”, ordered the part, and replaced it with in 2 days. Same exact explanation as to why it happened as before.

At roughly 6000 miles I was descending down the side of a mountain just north of where I live. Highway speeds of 50-60 MPH, foot off the accelerator…. “ding” the darn light is back, and again I follow the same routine as above with the same ending, new exhaust oxygen sensor…. I was advised this time that this sensor is the only sensor on the vehicle that was not wrapped in insulation at the factory which could be causing the problem. I asked if they could wrap it and was told that since no recall has been produced from Dodge they would not be able to insulate the part. I left fed up with them and this constantly breaking part.

Are you bored yet??

So again at roughly 7200 miles this yellow warning light appeared on my dash, HELLO lemon law!!! So I went to the dealership, went straight to the service manager, explained to him that this is my 4th visit to this dealership for the light being on, and that I was really getting fed up with the same thing happening over and over with NO permanent fix. This time he took his laptop out and looked up the code, invited me into his office where he called Dodge himself. The person he talked to advised him that there has only been one other truck that he has heard of nationwide with this reoccurring problem. He also told him that this problem might be associated with a dirty injector. He said to look at the fuel cap to see if it was dirty and to have the injectors pulled and sent away for inspection. So after verifying that my fuel cap was clean, they gave me a rental and I was on my way. My injectors were shipped to a company in Central Pennsylvania.

Five days later my truck was ready to be picked up and the service manager wanted to talk to me. I went into his office and was told that the problem I was having was because my number six injector was dirty at the tip. It was not shutting off for the 0. 08 of a second (eight tenths of a second) that it should have during the 10 second deceleration period. I was also informed that my fuel was also tested at the same facility and the test came back clean. The company sent paperwork back to support their case, and also noted that this issue "possibly" could have been a result of some type of debris on the injector during its installation at the factory since the fuel that was left in the non-faulty injectors and the fuel that was tested was clean.

Sorry if I bored you, I just thought I would let you all know about the issue I was having in case someone else is having the same issue or possibly have this issue down the line.

Thank you for the Post, these are the things that help us all, and make the TDR a valuable resource I am glad they resolved your problem, sometimes things just happen.

Thanks for taking the time to post it. That's good information, particularly for the owners of 2011 and 2012 trucks.

You apparently did a good job of getting the service manager's attention and fortunate that he was professional enough to really search for a cause and solution.

The Service Manager was right in telling you that a "leaking or Sticking fuel injector" could be possibly causing the problem, But... Again the most likely cause is a programing issue. We have been seeing quite a few trucks coming in with a P2196 code setting in the PCM. Cummins is working on a new Flash to address this concern. I am told that this new flash should be out soon (ie: any day now).
