I posted a question Saturday to see if anyone had problems with thier 48RE missing 2nd gear. Well I got mine back today and this is what the repair order said. They found the 2nd gear band broken, anchor piece stuck in the linkage that prevented it from going into park. Trans. kickdown (2nd) band burnt. Found clutches have heat damage. This is a 2003 1 ton, I have not pulled anything more than my 18ft fishing skiff. 2000lbs at the most. I do not hot rodthis and it is completely stock. I have 14900 miles on it. I hope it was a one time thing. I still LOVE my truck. It seems to be operating fine. I have not talked to the tech. to see what he thinks may have caused the problem. If I get any info I will post it.

I can relate a similar problem with the 47RE in my 2003. My case actually had a machining defect - the rear piston/servo/whatever's cylinder in the case was machined too large, causing leakage. When the case was warm, you could actually rattle the piston back and forth in the cylinder. It caused the rear band to drag, which wore the band down to the metal and started grinding into the rear drum. In addition, the OD clutches showed signs of some overheating, and the transmission had excessive endplay. I don't tow much either, and I don't run it in OD at low speeds. I just ended up with a crappy transmission that was built poorly. Luck of the draw I suppose.

No longer though, DTT took care of it all. :)

Try to find out the source of the problem, or it may just go again in 15,000 miles. I feel for you. By the way, my 48 RE has 13,000 on it, and about half of that towing 10,000lbs. Rock solid so far. Now if only the power steering wasn't leaking.
