Replace windshield

Can anybody tell me if the A pillars have to be removed

to replace the windshield? I need my windshield replaced

and i don,t want anybody messing with my gauges.

I,ll take them off before if I have to.

I had mine replaced about 5 months ago due to a stone chip. I did not watch them do it, but i asked and they said did not have to remove any interior trim, so you SHOULD be safe. Just ask before you have it done.

I had mine replaced about 2 months ago, you do not have to remove the A pillars. Just have a reliable source do it. The glass guy might need some help putting the window in place they usually send one guy out. Make sure they use alot of sealer around the window opening. Good Luck

MAN.....I hate when that happens....

I just got popped yesterday coming to work. Darn stone out of one of the many broke up places in the concrete on I-295 bounced up from underneath a Saturn I was passing.

It's about a 1/4" in diameter and I'm just waiting for it to take off across the windshield.

Anyone ever tried getting one spot-repaired?

I understand it's all done from the outside. First, the the rubber moulding on the outside is pulled off. Next, the rubber goop that the glass was set in is cut to release the old one. The opening gets cleaned up, new goop, and the glass is set. Somewhere in there is a test fit, and the edge blackout marked and applied.



Rattlinram, get yours fixed while it's still small. A shop I called said they can fix anything "dollar bill length" or less. More than that it's replacement. I waited too long and now have a big crack.

Lucky me I've had windshields replaced in many different vehicles and in my old 94 Ram. They do everything from the outside. Also one of the 48 hours or 60 Mins. type shows had a segment on windshield replacements and said they are integral with the vehicles safety. If not installed properly they pop out in an accident and that is not good, because they provide structural strength... .

The A pillar covers will stay put. Sometimes they do have to cut from the inside. In my six years body experience, I had to cut about 90% of them from the inside. If they have been replaced before, they can usually be cut from the outside.



Make sure you do not close the doors on the ram with the windows up for about 12 hours. You may pop air though the urethane sealer and cause a leak.



Make sure you save your receipt and check the seal with a garden hose or bucket of water. You do not want to go with a leaky windshield for very long. You will get a warranty on leakage, but check it yourself the next day.

Make sure you ask for a MOPAR windshield!!! If you don't, they will put a 3rd party one in. I learned this the hard way on a Honda I had. Had my 97 gaser windshield replace after a turkey went thru it at 70 MPH.

Yeah, definatley get the Mopar Window, i asked for it specificaly. My insurance covered the whole thing, but the price was $430. 00

I have had a couple of stone (rock) chips repaired on the 97 I had and was very satisfied.

Last week had a new windshield put in, results of Nevada gravel trucks. I waited too long and a crack took off 1/2 way across the middle.



I Made sure the window was down a crack to eliminate slaming the door and pushing on the new uncured glue on the windshield.

When they did mine they said i cant raise the windows all the way up for 72 hours or else if i slammed the door, the pressure would blow a hole in the window sealent. Thankfully i had Vent Visors

I had both my windshields replaced about two years ago and the installer, who did an excellent job, told me something I'd never heard before that makes perfect sense. He said the #1 cause of leaks after a new windshield is installed is from slamming the doors with the windows all rolled up in the first couple of days after installation. The pressure can pop the seal before it dries. Just crack your slider for awhile after you get the glass replaced, it worked for me.

Montana's sand for the highway in the winter is up to about 1/2" in diameter. I get a broken windshield replaced every year. They definitely do not have to take anything off on the inside except the old mirror.

Or if you alarm is wired like mine, you just slam the door windows down. Press the button, windows roll up, alarm sets, and doors lock.

I'm not so sure that there would be a big deal in getting a Mopar replacement. I'd always understood that there are only two or three glass suppliers in the country, and all window glass comes from these somewhat limited sources.

Not so, Jakebud. There are 7 or 8 domestic producers of auto glass, 3 or 4 in Mexico, and many others in South America, Canada, the Far East, Europe, and England- all of which export into our country. Of these, most are good with the exception of the Chinese in my experience. As they all have to conform to DOT standards, the accuracy of fit is the biggest difference. Remember also that private branding is rampant- just because it says "Mopar" on the part doesn't mean it was manufactured by DC, just like Sears doesn't make batteries or tires.

Had mine replaced about 2 mos ago. The installer did everything from the outside. I was very pleased with the work but they never said anything about keeping the windows rolled down. I don't think I have any leaks or I would have noticed by now. I guess I just got lucky.

$430!!! That must be for the glass!

I had mine done a couple years ago, they stuck the insurance company for $950!
