Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Replaced B/U Light Switch on 5600

I just turned over 39K miles and had to replace the backup light switch on my 3500's 6spd. $63. Any had theirs go bad?

Mine was "twitchy" for a few months, but seems to be working well now... Weird.

Had to replace mine at 95k. the second one is up 302k with no problems.

mine will flicker on and off unless I keep constant pressure on the gear shift. Not too bad so I haven't got around to doing anything about it yet. Is the switch hard to replace?

Easy Remove

let exhaust cool, unplug connector and use 22MM open end wrench. It's loceted on passenger side about 3/4 ways up.

Mine went out at 39000 and got one from dealer for $54 in Central Texas, not to good at night with no b/u lights!

Like stated above, mine would flicker unless I held pressure against the shifter. Works alright now though. Go figure.

Does anyone have a place to order these online? Mine went out well under warranty but never made it to the dealer so I guess I'll have to foot the bill...



Did you guys test yours or just assume no backup lights = faulty switch?

I tested mine

Easy test: remove connector, insert a jumper wire inside of the connector tail and turn on the ignition switch. If the lights come on, pretty good bet it's the switch. To complete the test, remove the switch from the transmission. Get a continuity meter, insert the leads in the switch and press the steel ball in. you should not see any continuity, although mine did. I haven't cut it open yet, but I beleive the contacts are burnt and wont' carry much current.

I'm in the midst of installing aux back-up lights and noticed the fuse was blown: AGAIN! I guess the factory back-up lights are so pitiful that I don't notice when the fuse blows. My question: Was the back-up light fuse blowing the indication of your switch failure?



Any other's have a problem keeping a fuse in the back-up light circuit?
