I too am ready to brave my first one of these. Have printed all the instruction posted lately, etc. So here is my question.

Is the 60 sec of cranking normal or only if you dont prime the system again with the manual pump?

Color black?? how many miles??
Question if you rub your finger down the pleats do you get any black from the wipe off??
If you get some is it kind of slick, kind of like a thin jelly feel??

I fill my filter about 3/4 with diesel before installing with no pumping and have never cranked longer than 10 seconds, the engine will run rough for 30 seconds, but as soon as the air is worked out runs fine. Have also tried opening the filter bleed and pumping to finish filling the filter, sort of a PITA, but it starts instantly, easier just to start it with no pumping.

I recently replaced my filter. Piece of cake to do. The old one was very black and looked like the original at about 68,000 miles!! I primed mine with a broom handle to reach the primer so I didn't have to reach down there so far. It fired up like I hadn't done a thing just about, just gave a couple sputters. #ad

Before I reinstalled the filter housing, I filled it up almost all the way up with fuel. I didn't remember about the manual prime, D'OH! Also, my recollection of the crank times might not be right, it might have taken only 15 to 20 seconds. I do remember getting a little worried at one point! #ad

Also, I know the fuel filter had a minimum of 7000 miles on it, because that is how many miles I've put on it since buying the truck. My guess is the filter has at least 12,000 to 15,000 miles on it.

However, this still didn't fix my start up problem. When I first start it, the engine idles at 500 rpm, then slowly climbs to the usual idle of 750 rpm. I know the idle rpm is set too low, because when I shift into drive, it drops to about 625. This has caused some stalling problems. I'll tackle that project next.....

My 97 idles the same way. 500 cold warms up to 650 range in about 1 min. Hot 750 in park, and maybe 625-650 in drive.

I have heard to have the injector timing checked first, once set ( if necessary ) then go for the idle speed. One of my next steps too. Also supposed to use optical something or another for the idle adjust.

How about feedback from the exerts. Does this really have to go into the shop. Asking 3-4 hours depending, for both.

Sly, for the timing it's better to take it to a shop, but not to the stealer. The tools to adjust the timing cost more than having it done, you won't likely need it done again for a long time. You can adjust the idle easily yourself, there's a thread here in 12 v right now that tells how.

Well, I finally got up the nerve to change the fuel filter. I've got the canister type with the replaceable element. Everything went very smooth, and I only had to crank it for about 60 seconds (2 - 30 second attempts) before she fired up and idled. I've been having a startup problem lately, so I will see if this cures the problem.

Now, a few questions. The new element (from Cummins) has off-white pleats. The pleats on the filter I pulled out were black. So, were they black from contaminants in the fuel? Also, the gaskets seemed to be a little loose, so I'm guessing it has been a long time since the fuel filter had been replaced.

Well, I was a little leery at first, but my first time only took 30 minutes, so I'll add this as another DIY maintainence item on the Cummins.
