Who says an exhaust brake doesn't extend the life of the service brakes? I think I could have got another 10k out of them to get beyond 800k:-laf

They last a long time when they are out of adjustment. I found that I must manually adjust often, when I do there is a noticable difference in stopping power, and they do wear down.

PS- You should notice that 2 of the 4 new shoes are thicker, they get installed in a specific way.

Gary,

What did you have to do to restore normal clutch operation last week?

Are you currently working on rebuilding the other 12 valve you bought recently?

Dear Mr. Ames:

Please review my recent post on replacing my rear brakes. Mine lasted 207,000 miles but unfortunately, I don't think that they were working correctly for a good portion of the time. The first comments that I received on my post were about the failure of the automatic adjustment mechanism to work properly. I think that the replies were correct.

Now that I have new shoes and wheel cylinders (Napa P/N 37337), I can actually feel the rear brakes working. I thought that I wouldn't feel a thing but I get the slight "tug" of the rear brakes--sort of like trailer brakes working but only on your truck.

I will be watching the rear wheels more closely and adjusting them as necessary.

Best of luck.

GAmes,

I noticed on your signature that that you have a 1997 Dodge 3500, 2wd, G56 6 speed. Since in 97 Dodge came with an NV5600 6 speed or maybe even a NV4500 5 speed, how did you get a G56, 6 speed? A G56 6 speed was introduced on the 05. 5 Dodge. Did you change it out or is it a typo? Just curious.

Needed new clutch linkage. Underwood Tire, not far from the Fairview, TN Flying J, is the workplace of Big Papa, a TDR member. They had a new HD SBC linkage set installed at about noon and I was on my way. The new 12 valve is in the garage, ready for the swap. I have a bass tournament this weekend, and will start disassembling the truck on Monday.

The NV5600 was not an option in '97, it came with an NV4500. I did the conversion last March, which was highlighted in issue 69. This is the post

Ironically, that is when I installed the clutch linkage that Harvey asked about. I bought it on Feb, 22 and it turns out it is warranted for a year. I bought it from Mopar4Less, but they tell me the local Dodge dealer should replace it for me. I'll give it a try tomorrow. I am anticipating a hassle.

It is well documented that the rear self adjusters do not work well. I gauge when they are in need of adjustment by how far my parking brake pedal goes down. When the pedal goes nearly to the floor, they get manually adjusted.

Kyoung, they absolutly shouldnt be dragging.

Have you jacked it up and spun them manually to confirm this?

If you own a 2nd gen dodge and the rear brakes are DRAGGING you have some serious problems.
