Just replaced my Transfer case yesterday.

My truck has 98000 miles on it and I tow heavy. I have also the 2WD low kit on so that I am able to maneuver my heavy 5th wheel around in campsites and such without jumping the clutch. .

On my trip to the northwest, I was just putting it into the low gear to back the trailer when it clunked then no go. . @$@#%%@#@ was my direct response... lol

So I lost the low gear in 2WD. . I then proceeded to use 2wd high until on one time, when decelerating downhill, the transfer case slipped into Neutral... . Did this twice.

Since I have a 2wd low kit which manually disables the front axle, I used 4wd high gear to get home.

Transfer case at home is $1200 with the core exchange... Not too bad of a chore to get it changed. . had it done in like 3-4 hours.

I used an ATV jack that has 2 rails to balance an ATV and used 2x4's to make the angle right. worked pretty good. An ATV jack is like a transmission jack.

Also Noticed a cool thing. . There is a PTO cover on this and I have the old Fast coolers on my workbench... first oil change for the Case I should put one of them on. It does clear the exhaust pipe... should add about another 1/2 quart.

Does anyone know if Coasting in Neutral in the main transmission damaging to the transfer case or the transmission?. . I read in a service manual that if you are towing the truck with the rear wheels on the ground, not to exceed 30 mph... if so, remove the driveshaft. .

So if I have done alot of coasting to save fuel with the engine running, is this damaging?

The last question I asked, I was answered. . It refers to the angle of the truck, the front gear does not get oil when towing. . so no more than 30 mph when doing that with the driveline still on

When ever the rear drive shaft turns

The oil pump in the transfere case will lubricate its components. The oil pump is splined to the mainshaft. I think the only exeption is in reverse. So don't drive around or coast down thoughs hills in reverse. :-laf:-laf
