Just because a Dodge Dealer sells is don't make it right... !!!

Think about it some dealers will put a 12" suspension lift on with 40" tires and a body lift!!!! Just because they say that since they installed it that it will not void your warrenty, ya wright, try to bring that same truck to another dealer and see what happens!!!!

I must have missed that water comparison, but thought I would offer the observation that these filters filter particles from air, not water. There might be a difference.

I am guessing they are talking about barometric pressure, in other words how efficient the filter is.

I may be wrong (again!) - but I sorta thought that printed efficiency ratings were governed by a SAE testing method - hell, if NOT, *I* could sell a "high performance" filter made of quarter inch spaced wire screen, use 1 inch diameter rocks as the "test material", and claim 100% efficiency!

I'm pretty sure some governmental watchdog watches product efficiency claims FAIRLY closely!

OH - and by the way, for the worriers concerned by the visible pinholes seen in the K&N filters when viewed against a strong light source - K&N states what you DON't see, is the many fine strands/hairs the criss-cross those minor openings, effectively filtering those opening as well - sounds sorta weak, and I've never verified it with a magnifying glass - but that's THEIR story anyway...

All they're doing is responding to the market. Someone enough people want a K & N, they got 'em. If they want an aFe, they got those too. And if enough people want wadded up toilet paper instead of pre-made filters, watch the Dodge dealer run down to the local grocery store and stock up.

Since this thread looks slightly hi-jacked, let me offer my solution to discourage underhood rodents..... at least mice.

Buy a box of dryer fabric softeners... . like Bounty or Bounce. Stuff 6 or so in various locations around the engine compartment. Change them out every couple of weeks as they lose their potency. Mice don't like the smell.

Far out! Good idea, and thanks!

engineering "101" //// 2. 307 ft of head (water) = 1psi /// filter media is generally measured at a given cfm and the pressure(negative) between the filter and the prime mover(fan/blower etc. ) is what is the inches reading refers to. 28"'s = 1psi or 2. 3 ft ,14 = 1/2 psi and so on. water tower 231 feet tall = 100 psi /// 25"'wc(water columb) on our filter minders = change(factory spec. ) or about minus . . 91 psi for what this is worth!!!!!

By golly, I've got that! If I understand things correctly and I use the right filter, any rat that tries to eat it will drown under a 231 foot tall water tower. Where do I buy one of these filters?

Yeh, kinda figgered somebody would - especially folks that use Amsoil. They like them bypass filters 'cause they help out oil that won't quite make it to the recommended change time.

And thanks for calling this 67-year-old "sonny. " Haven't heard that in a long time.

Been Running K/N for years...

K/N is first rate. Ran it in my Toyota truck for 8 years and 189K miles trouble free in dusty invronment. Ran it in my 96 gasser Ram, 00 Ram Cummins and in my 02 3500. I did put an AFE in my wife's 03, because I liked that setup.

Everyone can use what they want, but I will always use the oiled airfilters.

If the oiled air filters are so great, why don't they put them in heavy equipment or semi's???

Just an outloud thought... ...

Wiredawg, you may have gotten away with that because you know how to oil them. Unfortunately, most people think more is better. The Cummins rep I heard was emphatic when he said DON'T use K & N filters because if they are over-oiled and the suction pulls gunk into the engine. By that he probably meant careless owners who buy only OEM filters won't ever have that problem.

2 cents worth

All this talk of voiding the warranty was making me a little nervous so I called my local service manager (not where I bought the truck!) and talked to him about "performance upgrades" He said he would stand behind the warranty (within reason) unless someone directly from Chrysler told him different. It just goes to show you that your warranty is only a good as the guy behind the desk. Of course that leaves the question what within reason?

:(

Proper Oiling

SLinse:

Difficult to say why we don't get a lot of things stock OEM. Cost is one thing; lifetime use versus replacement every 15K miles. High flow, good sounding exhaust versus restrictive quiet ones.

Jeremiah:

You're right on about going light on the oiling. I only oil the tops of the ridges. Takes about 30 - 45 minutes to properly oil it. I then let it sit a while. It takes patience and follow the instructions.

All: Not everyone likes it, but I love hearing mine and my wife's turbos whining at sub dog whistle frequencies. WooHoo.

pressure drop/standard eff. ratio or square inches of filter media/pore size is what we are lookig for to get more cfm to the engine without particles of @#$% is the problem without raising a warranty question or did Imiss something ?

Well I don't have access to a truck Dyno but we played around with new stock (Suzuki) and new K&N filter on a lightly modded motorcycle. THe stock filter made more power. I talked with Norm from K&N and was told many of the filters are over oiled from factory. We never had a chance to try rerunning bike with a cleaned/properly oiled filter but I have heard from a number of people the Hi-Perf (like the stock Suzuki)paper filters will flow more than the cloth/oil filters. Is there a good paper filter for these trucks? flip side my EGT appear to have good down by 25o with the K&N on my 96 I wonder if that is "filtered" air after reading and looking at the holes in K&N, Anyone have a magnifying glass that can verify the micro fiber in the "holes?"
