Mysteryman, what is your address. I am just gonig to send my getrag to you for a rebuild :)

It is quite noisy now and the truck is parked. I bought the truck a year ago with 197K miles on it and don't know the history of it.

on the foreigh pickup market has anybody seen the numbers on how poorly the new "fullsize" foreign pickups are selling.

Wow, I'm really enjoying your Getrag posts, mysteryman. Glad to have an authority on here, since nobody listens to me. :p

Interestingly, the trans in my current truck was a reman from Getrag, and that rear bearing was burned out when I got it. So that makes perfect sese that they were setting them up too tight. The rear bearing races were also loctited in, which made it kind of a bear to get apart.

We replaced that bearing, and I've been running it five years now. Been into 3 or 4 others that only needed a part or two. We haven't seeen one that needed a complete rebuild yet (well, maybe one. ) We have one rebuild kit and have just been taking out what we need for the trans we're working on, and then replacing the pieces to keep the kit whole.

Also glad to hear your recommendation of zero preload on used bearings. I think that's realy important. We're just a couple hacks, really, and we were trying to set them up at . 006 and they just felt too tight when you turned them by hand, so we've been setting them up at zero. I was feeling slightly uneasy about that until now.

what about the 1st to 2nd synchro?

I bought a 1990 250D (2wd) a couple of years ago. The odometer which showed 360,000 miles had stopped working some time earlier. Having replaced that I am guessing it has about 380,000 now. I love it, and the Getrag shifts beautifully as long as you listen to it and go into the next gear (particularly 2nd) at the right time. But I remember some earlier posts about the 1st to 2nd synchro pack being a week element. I do not think I really need it any better than it is (noone else drives it), but I am curious what others might say.

In common with an earlier post in this thread I find that the torsional oscillation causes gear clatter if you apply torque below about 44 mph in 5th. (I have AmsOil in it, 10-30 if memory serves. Southeastern PA is not too cold. )
