I asked this question a few weeks ago, but received no response. Thought I'd ask again, especially now that the Titan SuperTank is now available.

Here goes and I quote from the manufacturers advertising:

1. Transfer Flow's replacement tank holds 56 gal. , is made of 12 & 14 ga. aluminized steel, and hangs down 3 1/2" below the lowest frame member.

2. Titan's replacement tank holds 62 useable gallons, is made of the same material as the OEM tank and includes a steel rockshield, and hangs down 2" lower than the stock tank.

I wonder about how vunerable the tank would be to dragging on rocks in rough terrain. I don't pretend my truck is a CJ-5, but we do sometimes drive on Forrest Service roads, which can be pretty rough. For example, I want to someday drive the backroad between Telluride and Ouray, Colorado.

At first thought, I would think that the Titan tank (2" lower than the stock tank) would be a little higher and therefore less vunerable, than the Transfer Flow tank (3 1/2" below the lowest frame member).

Do you folks agree with that reasoning? Or am I visualizing it wrong?

something to think about. . 12&14g steel that tank is heavy, very heavy.

I had a areo tank on my 98 truck made from steel it held 63 gal, was very nice for long distance crusing but that thing took to people to pick up when it was empty. I have thought about the supertanks poly tank for my long bed truck and that is probably the way I'll go.

Robert,

I hadn't thought much about the weight difference, until your reply. You make a good point.

What about the ground clearance with the aero tank? That is what I have been wondering about.

I never hit it on anything, but I dont go rockcrawling with my truck I have an atv & dirt bike for that stuff. I take my trucks on fire roads all the time and I never had any problem. you will hit the transfer case just as easily as the tank.

Btw the areo tank hung down about 2. 5 to 3 inches below the frame also.

If you get the supertanks let me know how it fits, they say it uses the existing holes (no driling).

maybe we can get a group buy... anyone. . anyone. .

got any more info on that titan supertank... ???

you could always fab up a skid plate for the tank out of steel... or aluminum for lighter weight

they sent e-mail to me and I posted it in the 3 gen stuff. the said it was there finest product yet... but maybe there other stuff is just crap  :-laf :-laf

We installed a Titan tank on my 04. 5 600 3500 dually and it fits like a glove. One caution on 04. 5, the filler neck is 1. 25 not 1. 5. Solution take out their 1. 5 fitting and replace it with a 1. 5 pipe close nipple, 1. 5 pipe 45* elbow and a 1. 5 pipe to 1. 25 barbed hose fitting from Granger. Looking at the truck from the side you cannot see the tank at all. The galvanized steel skid plate is heavy duty and very well made. Oh!! And the best part is, more than 700 miles in the west with a 11500 lb. pay load. :D

Anyone asked Supertanks if they are coming out with a 6. 5' bed Dodge model? They have both long and short bed models for Ford and Chevy, why just a long bed model for us? Hopefully they just need to shorten this one for a 6. 5' bed and that's their next product.

gbraden: Transfer Flow says it hangs 3-3. 5 inches below and it does, but so does the stock tank. They were claiming that the tank would have 8 inches of ground clearance and that is why they don't recommend them for the 2wd's. After talking to one of their engineers, I checked out both my 00 and 04. 5 and I have come to the conclusion that their tank hangs no lower than the stock one. On the 00 the only problem I can see is the anti-roll bar is very near the tank and a broadside in the rear wheel could puncture the tank. On the 00 the stock tank hangs every bit of 3" below the frame the entire length of the tank. The frame on the 04. 5 tapers vertically towards the rear tire well and that tank as well hangs every bit of 3 or more inches below the frame also. I really am at a loss as to their concern.

I just installed a Transfer Flow 56 gallon mid-ship replacement tank in my 2004. 5 3500 dually. I was concerned about how low the tank might be too, but the bottom of the tank seems to be no lower than the stock tank was. Yes, the Transfer flow tank is heavy, but its built like a brick s**t house. I am very impressed with the quality and workmanship of the tank. If you are thinking of a replacement tank, I highly recommend Transfer Flow's tank.

I recently did the fuel tank mod to my 03 if the super tank is anything like the stock tank it is pretty tough. I had to put some effert into drilling through the tank with a new whole saw.

Thanks for all of your replies. I made my decision and just got off the phone from placing an order. The tank I selected is ... ... ... . (drum roll) ... ... ... . SuperTanks.

Glenn :D

Just as a caution:

Prior to the TDR website I tried an Aero Tank replacement in my '95. It was so poorly welded that it not only leaked, but when I took it to a local welding shop to see if it could be re-welded the owner said, 'It looks like it was welded up by a seven-year-old. " Poorest quality product I have ever purchased anywhere, anytime.

Finally got my money back less the two way shipping costs. A lesson sorely learned.

short bed

SInce the tank for the long bed has come put I inquired about the tanks for the short bed this is the reply I got...

Dan,

We are running as fast as we can. We've been working on many developments in our product line. We will try to have something going in January for your tank. We appreciate your patience and hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
