Since we seem to be seeing more injector failures, and mine goes in tomorrow for at least one bad one, what are they putting back in the truck? Does anybody know if there is an updated part number for replacement injectors or are they just refitting the same obviously defective parts?

I am preparing for my adventure to the dealer for this. My truck has under 5000 miles and I have had it less than two months. This is completely unacceptable and I am preparing for it to get worse. I keep reading about guys waiting for injector problems to be fixed and having to wait two weeks. That isn't going to fly. I am considering a pre-emptive strike on DC customer service to let them know they need to ship some injectors for my truck overnight ;) Why aren't dealers stocking the dang things? Why does it seem to take them so long to diagnose and fix these simple things?

See, I'm getting riled up already

Point is, if there is an updated part, I want ALL SIX done right now, not two here and two there. If they are just fitting new potentially defective parts I am going to shove the truck back down the dealers throat. I just got rid of a Chevy to avoid stuff like this, I'm NOT going back down that road.

mine was at the shop 16 days. problem is still not fixed! 6* out this morning. truck went straight to 1000rpm when started and puked blue smoke for over a minute. truck is going to diffrent dealer monday. maybe this one will fix the problem! this is truly unaccapatble! COMONE DC!!!!!! :( ... ... ... james

Had #5 injector go out at 1500 miles. Took my 5 star dealer 7 days to get the part and fix it. I assume it was not any updated model. The good thing was they put me in a new phord 1/2 ton pu to drive around. Nice truck!

Injector replacements

I don't think we can count on new and updated injectors when they can replace I believe (3) injectors at a time at the most per STAR. It probably wouldn't be a good option for the truck to have a different style in say one cylinder. It probably wouldn't run too well, all though it's not running well for some of you now or you wouldn't be taking them in. I had some experience with bad injectors as it took about 6 weeks to get mine fully lined out and I had 3 replaced and then 3 more and then one of the last three went bad. Frankly, since I started using Stanadyne and changed my fueling location I haven't had any trouble now in about 6k miles since they messed with it. Also I put on a 3 micron FASS which probably helps a lot I would think compared to the stock filtering system. Your right,... it is a pain. Good luck.

This is the part number on my invoice when they replaced an injector on my 04. 5 600.

Diagnosed tested and replaced #6 fuel injector. Removed and reinstalled exhaust manifold as part of diagnostic procedure per Star instruction.

I being someone who works at a dealer kinda have to stand up for the dealers on this one. ( I know, flame on. ) The majority of the parts for these engines are restricted parts, such as the injectors, turbo, high pressure fuel pump, etc... Meaning they must be okayed by STAR after doing many tests which are sometimes bogus to get them to send you a part. Only after a tech has successfully completed these tests to thier liking they will send the parts to the dealer. Many of the parts are on backorder which adds to the wait. BHolm, The injectors are reconditioned factory pieces, as are the turbos. As noted by the R in the part # that JVolpe listed. The AB at the end of the part # means the part has superceded a couple of times. Just remember its not ALWAYS the dealers fault.

You mis-read, or I mis-stated. I KNOW it is not the dealer, I really like how the dealer has treated me so far and I genuinely like the one service writer. I will be giving a HUGE RASH OF DUNG to the person at DC who is holding up the process. I am going to do my darndest to be back in a running truck in less than a week. That means they immediately fix mine or replace it. I will be curious to see how my serious hardball approach works. I hate to admit it, and I hate to have to be such a pain but you know what, the really nasty PO'ed customer thing worked like a charm with GM's customer service.

Could it be that just like surveys for sales and service that these customer service reps on the phone may also be getting paid according to customer satisfaction? Meaning, if they don't get you to a point where you admit satisfaction, they loose money. THAT would be sweet.

I will definately let you guys know how it plays out tomorrow.

Well I have to add that I took mine in on a Wednesday morning. It was already warmed up, so the injector/diagnostic tests they ran on Wednesday showed everything within normal range. I told them to keep it overnight, start it up in the morning and then call me. They called and said that they agreed that there definitely was a problem. They contacted Star for diagnostic instructions, by noon that day after the initial tests, my Service writer ordered the injector out of Dallas with the assumption that it would be Star approved. The Star diagnostics showed #6 injector bad. Injector arrived Friday morning and I picked up the truck Friday at noon.

My Dealer's Service Department has always done everything they could to identify and fix any issues that I have had. The problem is I have had too many issues. I think I still have at least one bad injector, starting to sound and run like before the last one was replaced.

JTeague,

Really good info. Tks, helps the understanding of what your getting. So do you know why they are having sooooo much trouble with injectors on the 04. 5? And if the AB indicates superceding has been done a couple times,... . wouldn't that possibly cause less than smooth running engine? They wouldn't be exactly matched or anything. Pls advise.

What I was looking for in an "updated" part was a part sans the failure. If these are failing in similar fashion to the ones on the d-max it is most likely injector tips cracking. Come on Bosch! build them right!

They wont have any trouble diagnosing mine warm, it is just as bad hot or cold. Hopefully I will get lucky and they will get it done quickly. The holiday weekend is almost certain to prolong the process though.

Man ... reading these posts about the new trucks makes me more and more glad I have a '97 12-clanker. Looks like the Cummins is going the way of the PowerStroke ... another over-engeneered disaster. What a shame ... these problems seem to be multiplying and I will need a new truck in a year or two ... I am loosing confidence quickly. Should I consider a gasser? or a small International 4200 / FL60?

Maybe it would be a good thing if MB does put their 906 engines in the Dodge ... if Cummins can no longer supply quality, then it is time for something new.

It seems like ALL of the new high pressure common rail systems are having some issues. Even MB has had a bunch of problems with CDI diesels in europe, where the fuel is supposedly sooo much cleaner.
