Some of you may have already figured this out but it is new information for me so I'll pass it on in the hope it can help another member.
I attempted to adjust my passenger side external towing mirror a few days ago. When I pressed hard on the inside edge of the glass something flexed. I felt of the mirror surface and it seemed firm, nothing broken inside the mirror, so I walked away puzzled. The next time I opened and shut the door the glass dropped out on the pavement and shattered. The only thing holding the mirror in the frame is three tiny 1/2" squares of double sided adhesive. Mine had dried and the adhesive failed.
I had to drive for a couple of days without the mirror until I returned home. I began making calls and proved what I suspected, dealers cannot/will not sell the glass only. They'll sell the entire towing mirror assembly.
I called a commercial glass retailer and heard, "sure, we can get the glass for you, what year is your truck. " A couple hours later I had a new glass installed for the grand price of $20 parts and labor. Any dummie, even me, could have installed it but I didn't argue with the price. The installer used industrial grade adhesive from a tube and had it installed in less than five minutes.
If you break or lose the glass in your Gen II and probably Gen III Ram, the mirror glass is available from the aftermarket. The replacement fits perfect and looks exactly like OEM.
