Okay, I've decided I want to get rid of my straight pipe and put a muffler back on the truck. The drone is killing me! The straight pipe sounds great in town and on short trips but on a long haul the drone from it just wears me down.

I have searched on here multiple times to see if anyone makes a replacement muffler (or one that takes little modification) for the factory muffler on an '03. I have had no luck with these searches. I see that AFE makes one for the '04. 5 but that doesn't do me much good. I've also seen the Donaldson's come up as well as Walker, Aeroturbine, Roktek, and others, but nobody has confirmed if they bolt in with minimal modification.

Can anyone recommend a good sounding muffler that will install in the factory exhaust system? At this point I'm willing to give up a little sound for some quiet.

Thanks,

Jeff

When I had my '01 Joe Donnelly recommended a truck muffler from NAPA which I bought and installed. The p/n was provided here by other members and in Joe's article in the TDR quarterly several years ago. I don't have access to the p/n any longer but you can find it with a search.

Found one. It is Napa 21467. It is 20" long and has a 3. 5" inlet/outlet. Now where to locate it? I'm starting another thread for that.

I recently put on a 51 " donaldson and It is almost as quiet as stock but much more free flowing. Went in really easy (Had it welded not clamped) and I think it was about 80. 00 to my door.

On my 4" exhaust I have a fluted resonator in front (flutes forward) and a 30" Magnaflow in back, and it sounds just right to me now. It's a little loud during hard acceleration, but quiet while cruising.

I have the Donaldson 51" 5" in and out which reduces to 4". Also you can do a set up for under $100. Got all my parts from Ryder Fleet products.
If you want I can email picture and part numbers.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I managed to use the Napa 21467 (basically a resonator) and it replaced a section of the factory exhaust almost perfectly. There is a section of straight pipe immediately in front of the factory muffler location. This pipe is 22" long, the muffler is a little over 20" long.

Had it out on the highway this last weekend and under acceleration it is a little loud but while cruising it isn't bad at all. Pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
