Those who have gone this route, what is (was) your preference? What has your experience been with dealers and after-sale service? Was the installation as easy as advertised?

ats will never give you any service ever. there is a better alternative that is also about $1,000 less expensive and will work very well for you. purchase a he351c takeoff from a 04. 5 up install a boost elbow on it and you are set to go. use the money saved to replace the rocktech with a smarty jr.

I'm curious why you want to replace your turbo? From the mods you have listed it's a complete waste of money, and before you say "to increase mileage" it ain't gonna happen. Maybe the saying "If it aint broke fix it till it is" applies. LOL, Just kidding. If you just have to mess with it I have to recommend the 04. 5 and up turbo too unless you have plans for a big uprate in power then I would recommend twins.

i have had my BD Super B on now for over 4 years and have had no problems. i love the power increase and turbo lag is minimal over stock based on how much more performance you get.

Jim

What does adding the boost elbow do for the addition of the '04. 5 turbo? How is the newer turbo any better than what is stock on an '03?

Craig

the boost elbow is a fitting that replaces the current fitting that goes to the wastegate diaphragm. it has a small bleed hole drilled in it. the purpose is to let the turbo go to a higher boost pressure before the wastegate activates and/or defueling starts. there is an adjustment setscrew incorporated into the elbow to adjust for the amount of boost you want.

the effect the boost elbow has on an 04. 0 and the 04. 5 is slightly different as i recall. the 04. 5 has electronic controls involved. i hope someone will correct me if i am wrong on this.

By the way, in your sig, you show a 305/555. if that is true, you actually have a 04. 0. IMHO this is the best version of the 3rd gens, but i am biased. :)

Hope this helps

Jim

the he351c has a electric solenoid for boost control you need to use a boost elbow on it to be able to use it in a pre 04. 5 because there is no way to activate the solenoid

Dont both of these shops offer a twins kit using the stocker? My simple understanding is that the relative small stock turbo spools faster than most of the larger aftermarket turbos? If you were to keep the stock and then go twins, I think that you would keep the same spool up time but gain on the high end? Price wise would be just a tiny bit more?

I took Ckelly's advice and put on the 351 w/ a boost elbow. More performance than the stock 341 but without the big $$$ of aftermarket. If you have no plans for big sticks or over 450hp stick with the 351. Can't go wrong with the smarty JR either. I can see 35+ psi of boost now and egts never over 1250 on the perf tune towing with the temperature hot out. 341 I was 26 psi.

Lil red cummins... 305/555 is the number on the side of the valve cover-cover. :-0 Just dumb luck I ended up with this truck, but I sure enjoy the ride every day. The little mods have made it more fun to hot rod around town and pulling the camper is gravy.

CTony... where did you come up with the 351 turbo and elbow and if you don't mind what did that set you back. Do you pull anything?

Craig

CKelley gave me the heads up on my turbo. It was in the classifieds at dieseltruckresource.com. Try the want ads here and cumminsforum.com classifieds too. I paid $300 for the turbo (sold old 341 for $250), elbow for $25 and 4" downpipe $105 from dodge. I fabbed up the rest of the exhaust with heavy truck parts and the stock tailpipe. I already had the boost elbow. I had to buy the $3? clamp to hold the exhaust to the cast elbow. dieseltruckresource has a good thread on the swap. I tow a lot of the time with just the turbo and set to stock you feel a difference so 15hp at least. PM me if you have any more questions.

Tried a Super B on my 04. Real sloooow spooling. 70 mph = 2-4# boost. Max boost @ 95mph WOT was 29. 5#. Could feel a huge loss in power. EGTs went up 150f. Sent it back to BD. Must need a lot more mods then what I have.

Bill

Super B is relatively the same size as the stock turbo but with a larger efficiency map. The Special B is quite a bit larger (64/71/14). There are other companies that make S300 turbos with 62/65 or 62/71 with a 12 or 13ss housing. These are the first step up in the turbo mod. There are other turbos too that are ball bearing and would be different but less popular.

With the mods in my sig (Smarty is set to SW3, TM3, TQ2, RP1)...

When towing my 11k 5er up big grades in the summer, my max EGT is approx 1200F. My max boost level is approx 29 to 30 psi.

With the mods in my sig (Smarty set to SW1, TM2, TQ2, RP1)...

Max EGT is approx 1200F with 26psi max boost

Cruising at 55 to 65mph while towing, I will see approx 15 to 20 psi boost.

What would be the benefits of a new (higher performance) turbo for me??

I'm thinking I'm fine, but don't understand why you need a new turbo...

Thanks,

Louis

A HE351 would give you a bit of a boost over your stock turbo Louis. When I installed mine I could definitely tell the difference. Do you have any wastegate mods? With my jr set on perf 27 psi is max before the He351. I guess your injectors will give more fuel for more boost. My egts didn't change much with the addition of the turbo. I believe the smarty sees more boost it gives you more fuel. The 351 flows 950 cfm to the 341's 800cfm. I believe it is more efficient at higher boost levels too. I did my swap for only a few clams since I sold my 341. The ATS ex man and 4" exhaust was where my cost was in the swap.

Do you think this is a direct swap for me? Except for the boost fooler? I will be able to use my existing exhaust manifold, 4" SS downpipe and turbo inlet piping, right??

Thanks for the info!

Craig, not sticking my nose in your business or anything, but I notice you're running a K&N. You might consider checking with Cummins on that. Last I heard they did NOT recommend running a K&N. Again, don't mean to offend, just passing along what I was told.
