I have KDP damage, my local mechanic is replacing gear case cover with new cummins one, do i need to do something to the new case to insure that this doesnt happen again? or is the new gear case updated to prevent this from happenning again? thanks
Contact TST and get the dowel repair kit. Its around 50. 00 and includes a tab that bolts in place to keep the dowel pin held in place. If the new gear case was "updated" to prevent this, then there probably won't be a hole where the dowel pin could show through. I haven't heard of this being the case. Either way, TST would have the answer for you.
AMeissner sorry to hear of your problem. How do you know the kdp came out? I have never seen a kdp come out on a 24 valve engine. The timing covers were redesigned as of 98. 5. The covers were machined with a collar to the front of the cover to hold the kdp for coming out. So if you are replacing the cover look at hole for the kdp. You should see what I saying. Hopefully you'll be running soon.
Even tho Cummins redesigned the gear case in 98. 5, they continued to use the older gear case until they were all used up. (waste not want not) So... . it is entirely possible to get a 24 valve with the older gear case. I don't know how many they had left to use but I have heard that they finally used them all up in 99. But that is only hearsay and I couldn't back it up with facts. Maybe someone else knows.
I cann't disagree with you on this. It's just that never seen or heard of this problem on the 24 valve engines, but I do know for a fact that new timing cover housings are designed to hold pin from coming out for both 12 valve and the 24 valves.
Sorry bout the confusion, i have 8 CTDs from 89 to '01, this happened on my 1997 model. Thanks so much for the info, it was very helpful. We have 5 12valves, and this has been the first of the KDP problems, so maybe i have been luck. Thanks again.
