My pilot bearing froze up, so since I have everything apart I'm having South Bend send me a clutch too.



Since the NV4500 is out, is there anything besides the 5th nut to check? I took the back cover off the trans and the nut seems to be right where it should be. It also seems it has been replace with what was described as the dealers fix. Since money is a bit tight right now I'm going to not touch it since it "ain't broke yet". Is it worth taking the top of the trans off, anything specific to look for if I do?

Check the seal on the back of the motor while the trans is out. If it looks even a little questionable... . replace it now...

Check the metal clip that holds the release fork on the pivot ball... ... mine broke when we pulled the transmission but was really worn for some reason.....
 
I'd do the "real" fix on that 5th gear, I'm driving a 4 speed around for the third time right now. :{ I guess it depends on how much you like pulling all that stuff out. :mad:
 
Your pilot bearing "froze up" ? Check the tip of the input shaft, if it's very badly worn, you might want to replace it. They are not expensive or hard to replace. No special tools needed. You can use the bushing instead of the bearing, it comes with every SBC . Not my favorite way, if it's chewed up on a customer's truck, I replace his input shaft. Only ever found one THAT bad, out of the many clutches we've done, yours is probably still okay.

Excellent tip from Rharvey ! Rear main seal on the engine may need replacing. Big rig shops replace those every time the transmission is dropped, at least the good ones do... .
