Replacing wheel studs

I will be doing a rear wheel disk brake conversion next week and was wondering if it is possible to replace the wheel studs myself without a press?

When I had to replace my drums I was able to knock them out using a brass drift. To reinstall the studs, I used some flat washers and a lug nut, and pulled them through with an impact wrench - took a while but it got the job done.

You can use a hammer and punch to replace them.

My son does it the same way in his repair shop... its faster than setting up the pressand walking to the other side of the shop.

Two 4x4 block's of wood to set drum/disk on, a brass drift and the largest sledge I can swing. When the studs hit home you can tell by the sound change.

It's a good idea to find someone else to hold the drift, just in case your a little off on your swing.

Thanks for the replies. Air hammer sounds like the way to go and besides there is no one around here foolish enough to hold a drift for me

When I had my shop I used a piece of 2" bar stock about 3' long. All I had to do was drop it on the stud couple of times and it was out or in. A little tip is to use the old drum to support the hub when you drive the new studs in.

I had mine pressed in and out. Worked better for me. That is not the main reason for this post tho. I bought new studs but the Dodge dealer did not have enough for all I was doing. I got some from the local Autoparts store. The ones from the auto parts store went a little further through the hole than the OEM studs did and this caused a problem with my wheels. They didn't want to lay flat on the hub and I had some vibration issues. I ended up using a countersink on my wheels to get enough clearance for the wheel stud interface. Just wanted you to know what to watch for so you don't have the same problem. It might not be a problem with OEM wheels.
