Residential Thermostat

There was a thread about installing one of these in an rv. I was wondering which brand was easier to install or recommened? Also which wires go where? I have Duotherm and it seems like it takes too long for either the a/c or heat to kick on. This a wire diagram of my current wiring.

Changing the thermostat might make a`difference if there is a difference in the amount of temp change between turn off and tune back on... . this is the range that a thermostat can range between the setting and when it turns back on... . on most mechanical thermostats, those with mechanical bi-metal spring that range is 4-6 degrees... that might be much less with a digital thermostat that might be 2-4 degrees.....

On the other hand some heaters and AC's have cool down or a relax period before it can restart... ..... and this is a timer built into the control board... . as an example it might be that once the heater or AC shuts off... the circuit won't let it restart for say 10 min..... even if the thermostat calls for heat or cold...

I'd check this out from the manufacturer of the heater before`changing the stat.....

On my 5er I've changed it to allow a stat to turn on the heat bellow the old stat's bottom setting... . which was 55 degrees... the new stat has a bottom of 40 so that I can keep it from freezing in the winter where its stored... .

Thanks for the input.

With the heat on its usually about 20 to 30 minutes before it kicks back on after it runs its cycle. Just trying to see who has done this and did it make any improvement in the coach. Not sure how the current themostat works or if there is something better.

I changed my duo therm stat out for a white-rodgers I think. Made a huge difference in the comfort level. It has a 1 degree resolution with a 5min compressor lockout if it calls for A/C. Worth the change in my opinion.

I have a Duo Therm control in my trailer. It has a on-off switch on the bottom. Selections are fan, heat, heat strip, and cool. In cold weather I like to run the heat strip at parks where i don't pay extra for heat. Temps and mode are controlled with up & down buttons. Unfortunately I couldn't have both heat strip and furnace. I installed a digital home type thermostat and transferred the furnace to the new thermostat. The wiring was under the refrigerator and easily accessible. It's just a two wire thermostat type wire. Now I set the heat strip on one temp and the furnace to another so that the heat strip starts first and when it can not maintain temp the furnace kicks on and it keeps it toasty warm. Now I have the best of both energy sources.

The best residential thermostats I have ever used are the Maplechase, which are now owned and labeled as Robertshaw, digital units. Very accurate, and adjustable for differential. They make make other units, so try to get what were Maplechase. Supply houses generally carry them.

Here is Ken's excellent instructions on installing a digital thermostat. I installed the Lux TX500 and it works great. I have it programed, just like a house thermostat, so it comes on in the morning, lowers slightly during the day, comes back up in the evening, and drops back at night. It does a lot better job maintaining a set temperature.

The 9600 Series are the units I have used, according to the site. We had radiant high-bay natural gas heaters(Reznor)in one of our buildings, and when they were on the Honeywell round thermostats they would short cycle and not heat properly no matter how much we fiddled with the anticipator, and other internal adjustments. A customer, who was an HVAC contractor, recommended the Maplechase units, and they made a world of difference.
