I have a pretty much stock 98. 5 ISB Quad Cab. Several months ago I removed the muffler. I had some drone problems and solved them by attaching angle iron on the exhaust pipe. My question to TRD members is:

HOW MUCH LOADER WILL THE SOUND BE IF I REMOVE THE RESONATOR? ALSO, HOW WILL THE SOUND BE DIFFERENT THEN WHEN JUST REMOVING THE MUFFLER? AND FINALLY, DO YOU THINK I WILL HAVE THE DRONE ONCE AGAIN.

Thanks for you help,

Bob Caldwell

muffler

I have the 4 in bd exhaust so maybe it doesnt apply. I have no resonator and a straight thru muffler. with the straight thru muffler it sounds good with no drone. It gives you a tiny bit of back pressure which is good for your motor. I do not believe it is very expensive

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you, but I have a question or two!

My muffler mysteriously disappeared one day, replaced by a piece of straight pipe. I also have the resonator.

Did you install the angle on the straight pipe between the resonator and the axle saddle? How did you affix the angle to the pipe? I assume it was installed so that the "ends" of the angle are touching the pipe?

My whole truck seems to vibrate around 2000 RPM. I assume that's the drone you speak of.

resonator removal/drone & fixes

Ethdee,

I attached 11/4 inch angle iron with typical exhaust clamps directly to the exhaust pipe. I put a notch in the angle iron so the clamp would stay in place. Also, put some on the exhaust pipe going over the differential and on the resonator(requires big clamps). That cut down considerable on the drone. Another thing I did (these are all suggestions from other TDR members) was to put insulation behind the rear seat and under the carpet. Again, this really helped to eliminate even more sound. I got the clamps and sound deadening material at NAPA and the angle iron from LOWE'S.

Hope this helps.

Bob Caldwell

PS-I did remove the resonator last night and put in a straight through pipe. Put some angle iron on it and there is no drone. The sound is awesome!!!! It seems louder at idle and during acceleration, but a highway speeds it is similiar to when I took off the muffler. I saved the resonator in case I need to reinstall - but at this time I can't see doing that.
