Almost lost a manifold bolt, my wife picked up the retention straps at Carson City Dodge (we live 180 miles away) need to know the correct positioning and torque of the straps under the bolts. anyone know the answer---THANKS!

Last time I had my truck in the shop was for the front brakes and a new ATS manifold. The guys doing the work for me swore that if I allowed them to put 2 locking-type flat washers under the stud head they would not back off. They said they hadn't got a truck back yet using those special type washer. We'll it's been months since that job and none of my bolts have backed out yet.

So far, I'm sold on them. Before I was constantly having to re-torque them after hauling heavy.

Thanks a bunch, we learn something every day, installed the straps per TSB no sweat... .

Don't assume that will fix your problem (although it may), there's been members on the board posting about loosening even after the straps.

rblomquist,

Do you know what type/part # the lock washers are? My ATS manifold bolts loosen up within a 100 miles - lost one all together. Was debating drilling and wiring the bolts but if a lock washer will work, that's much easier.

Sorta got tired of mine backing out on the old engine, had them cross drilled and safety wired. Was lucky mine kept falling out into the webbing tween the tubes. New engine they used the trick thicker gasket plus washers. Haven't backed out since, but don't have 10k on it yet. Will keep you posted.

Cheers,

Steve J

Oh man, I forgot the name they called them. I can call them and ask what the heck they are. All I know is they work.

The straps do not go under the bolts!Torque the bolts too 30 ft lbs. The straps are then driven over the bolt heads. Each strap will do 2 bolts. I started to install them on my 01 and gave up. Since I have an exhaust brake it was almost impossible to get the rear upper strap installed and the brake would have to be removed to install the lower strap. I attempted this after losing a bolt last year while on vacation. Now I just check the torque more often. Cylinder #6 seems to be the one that loosens more often.
