Jay,

Best wishes on a long and satisfying retirement. Enjoy your boating adventure. It sounds like a great experience.

I already HAD a project started that would be a Cummins 6B conversion. I had bought a 1989 pickup and a bunch of marine parts, even a complete 6BT that was in a boat fire plus a transmission that could handle it. I "scrapped" the project only because of the economy and I wouldn't get my $$ back come resale time. The current engine (Ford-Lehman diesel) runs great so I decided to leave it alone.

I'm sure we'll at least pass by Ilion.

Update: We are currently tied to a free dock in Herkimer, NY. Taking out=r time poking thru the Erie canal.

Right now sucking up some free wifi courtesy of a local resturant and counting WalMart trucks on I90:-laf

Enjoy your maritime retirement. I've often dreamed over the years of a trip up the Mississippi and another from Superior, WI or Detroit to the Atlantic via the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.

I'm sure it sounds a whole lot easier to accomplish than it actually is. A good bit of navigation experience and understanding of basics like how to pass through locks and where you can safely tie up and refuel or replenish supplies is vitally important and not to be ignored.

You've apparently been around boats and boating all your life so you are an old pro at the details.

A long trip in a navigable river would be the trip of a lifetime to me.

FYI you can rent what they call a "canal boat" and cruise the Erie and Champlain canals. Much of the Erie canal on the eastern end is the Mohawk River. The boats are easy to operate. Might be worth considering some day.

Jay,

The goal I'm working on right now and enjoying is adventure by motorcycle. I want to travel through all 48 contiguous states on my Goldwing.

So far, in less than a year and a half, I've covered all but KS, NE, SD, ND, WI, and NV. I'm leaving on a two week journey next week that will cover all but NV. I plan to cover NV later this year.

Next I want to ride through all the Canadian Provinces. I've only ridden the Goldwing in Ontario and Quebec so far. Perhaps a TransCanada trip next summer if the Goldwing doesn't kill me before I get to that goal.

I like the water and boats but have lived in dry west TX for the last 20 years where there are no lakes worth visiting. Boat ownership here seems silly to me. If I lived close to the water I would own a modest cabin boat instead of a fifthwheel.

I know that a cabin boat is big enough to get a novice in trouble. Many, many years ago I had a tiny little 14' ski boat and had it in a tiny pond outside of Voluntown, CT early one morning. A fog drifted over and I was stunned to realize I was lost in a tiny pond! The pond may have been 1/2 mile long! I could have moved in any direction and hit the rocks in shallow water in two minutes or less.

Hope you have a great time. My nephew just completed a M/C trip from Lake Orion, Mich. to Los Angeles, then up the coast to Oregon and back across the plains to Mich, 22 days, 16 states, 7146 miles and a lot of micro breweries along the way. Have fun, Harvey.

Your nephew is my kind of guy. I'd like to make the trip from LA to OR along the Pacific coast. I've read reports that suggest its an interesting trip with lots of scenery and quaint small towns.

Thanks for the good wishes.

I'm back! Got home saturday afternoon.
It was an awesome trip. There is some great scenery up north on the Canadian waterways. It was a great way to kick off retirement.
We were on the water for 96 days, covered 2190 miles, burned 607 gallons of #2 for an average rate of 1. 8 gal per hour (which also includes some gen set time), which is great for a 40 ft boat.
The weather cooperated for the most part, but it was an unusually hot and dry summer as you know.
The diesel and genset ran great with no hicups, and as far as I know I didn't touch bottom which is a good thing esp when you consider that much of the trip was in water with a depth of 6 feet (and my boat drafts 4 feet).

Hey, glad you had a good time. Does it seem funny to walk on land??? Do you grab the kitchen cabinets on the way by out of sheer habit????:D

Mike. :)

... now that's funny, right there.

Good to hear you made it back in good shape. My father has had nothing but problems this summer. He bought another old boat and can't get it to run well. I suspect the tank is filled with garbage. He is a frustrated retired guy and when he gets an old boat restored/operational, he sells that dam thing cuz it is no longer any fun. He gots to be working on one to be happy.

He also restored an old Airstream. Suprised he kept that all this time.

Hey Jay! Sorry I missed this thread, I would have met you someplace near Syracuse and we could have chatted. Glad you had a safe and fun trip. Maybe next time?
