I pulled my transmission out of my truck it is a five speed and put a south bend clutch in it. I got it all back together but i am having reverse light problems. One morning i started my truck and it was in nuetral and the reverse lights were on. Then my buddy was following me one time and i was in 5th gear cruising and said my reverse lights were on now they dont come on at all any help would be appreciated.

Ok I DONT have the 5speed, but here goes my 2¢:

disconnect the reverse switch at the transmission harness and drive the truck - if the backup lights are coming on you have a harness problem NOT a switch problem - pinched wire from the clutch job, etc. If all seems well then PROBABLY (!) the harness is ok and I would check the switch itself for being jammed or failing. I'm guessing you have the service manual (big book) in case you might need it for tracing wiring issues. Good Luck. I'll bet its something simple. As my dad the microwave engineer used to say - check the last thing you did!

Thanks man and yes i have a manual but i hate electrical stuff. I was knida hoping this was an occuring problem that people know how to fix but i will work on it some more. I will post when i figure out the problem

Disconnect the connector from the backup light switch at the transmission.

Turn the key to the run position (engine not running, transmission in any gear).

Jump the two conductors in the connector (a paper clip will work).

If the backup lights come on, the problem involves the switch.

If the backup lights don't come on your problem is somewhere other than the switch.

I had a problem like this & it turned out to be a bad connection at the back of the truck where the harness splits. The wires were all corroded.
