Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) reverse lights dont work?

all of a sudden my reverse lights dont work, i checked the bulbs they r good. any ideas? thanks

Check fuse in the dash panel - - its marked, if that is OK - - - then check switch on transmission just above pan on drivers side - - has three wires going to it held in with a standard Dodge Clip - - 2 of the wires are the back up lights hot in switched out - - 3rd one is neutral safety - - safety switch will work even when B/U lights don't. Got the switch from Auto Zone - - about $17. Takes a 1 1/2" deep socket (I think) to swap it out - - -in and out 10 minutes.

I've got the same issue with my '99 5 speed. Bulbs are good, but the lights don't work.

c. d. day, i shook the plug on the switch u were talkin about they came on but not as bright as norn, i will replace the switch tomorrow.

John - - - Your B/U light switch is on top of the transmission - - -hold the wire loom and follow it up to the top from the drivers side - - un-plug and re-apply some dielectric grease and re hook up - - should work - - a bad switch is pretty rare on a 5 speed.



Sickboy - - You might want to try to clean up the plug first.

Denny, if the switch is indeed bad how do you remove it from the transmission? I'm on the road with limited tools and just realized my reverse lights aren't working. I'm about to check the bulbs but I doubt they both died at the same time.

I had the same problem on my 99..... turned out to be a loose connection on the switch. I bought a harness before I realized the connection was loose & it is just laying on the shelf now. Dielectric grease should fix it.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - - - Never had to remove the switch on the five speed - - it's on top of the transmission and you can reach it from under the drivers side. The only time I had a problem with it was when I had a clutch chande and the mechanic forgot to hoo it up - - You might try dicsonnecting the plug and putting some dielectric grease on the contacts before you try changin it out.

As another data point, I had to replace the switch in my 99 5spd over a year ago. Definitely not the connector or harness, the ball switch was no longer making contact internally.
