Noticed that reverse in my auto transmission was slipping the other day. Went over my records and found that I had serviced the trans about 8000 miles ago but had probably mis adjusted the rear band. Read the manual wrong and adjusted to to 2 turns out instead of three. When I opened the pan I found fluid that looked like motor oil and some sludge w/ a few metal chips around the magnet. Changed the fluid and re-adjusted the band to 3 turns out and it seems to be ok now... . but I haven't drivin it much except to test it. Any thoughts?

Having the band adjusted too tight and causing it to drag could have glazed the band. These normally won't heal themselves. Hopefully the band isn't hurt too much. If it is you'll notice the slip is still there. If the trans has to come out in the future, it would be a good time for the DTT conv/vb upgrade. Good luck.

you should check the pressure in the port for reverse, its the one facing the back. Mine was slipping a little because my pressure was to low, it should be 300psi+. You might need a new valve body. Something to remember is the reverse clutches are the same as 3rd gear so if your not slipping in 3rd its probably just the valve body.
Thanks to BD for getting my auto working correctly behind my beast.

I brought my truck to the "stealer" for a trans service only to find they didn't have a torque wrench that worked, didn't know how to make the different pressure tests but they did know that I needed a complete rebuild for my trans. My symptoms are: early shifts, slipping during shifts, and reverse slipping although it has gotten better since I adjusted the band. So I've been reading the service manual and found several adjustments that might work: throttle valve cable, line pressure, hydraulic pressure test etc. These test procedures seem to be for gas engines. Does this make a difference?
