A few years back I saw a couple posts by people on reversing the mounting pipe on Factory electric mirrors to move them out further for towing wide loads. I was going to do this on my truck but I can't figure out how to get the end of the tube mounted to the mirror off with out breaking the glass out of the mirror. Is there a way to get to the 2 screws that hold the clamp inside the mirror housing without breaking the glass to get to the 3 screws that hold the electric assembly in? My factory manual is no assistance in this and I'm drawing a blank.

Thanks for any info you can give.

Happy Rammin,

Please don't let this post go away too soon. I've tried to figure this one out myself, and was too afraid of breaking the mirror to try.

Anyone..... ??

Phil,

I found this earlier today by searching,

"This is Ian.

While on holiday in a campground in Oregon in August 1999, I saw a '93 W250 with the mirror tubes reversed. Didn't take long to strike up a conversation with the owner. Reversed the tube on my driver's door right there, did the pax one a few months later.

Takes 3 - 4 hours to do each side, need to get the door liner off to unplug the mirror electrics then remove the complete mirror assembly from the door. Before removing the mirror electric plug, motor the mirror full to the left (driver's door) so that you can get in behind the mirror with a small wrench to undo the two clamp securing bolts. I used a 1/4" Snap On ratchet and a 1/4" drive socket.

Once it is all back together, mount a 5" convex mirror between the door and the mirror as there is quite a large blind spot abeam the back wheel of your vehicle.

Good luck, email me if you need more info. "

I have an extra mirror that I got, am going to try this, I already took the glass out, but couldn't see another way to do this, need to glue new glass in that one but the other side is still good so don't want to break the glass on it. I'll let you know if it worked as soon as I get a chance to try it.

I was able to get to the 2 bolts that hold the mirror on the tube by prying out on the mirror some and bending a 5/16" box wrench a little to get the back one and a socket with extension to get the near one. This was on my spare mirror, the only thing that looks like it will be real tough is getting the bracket mounted on the door as there isn't any room to scoot the plastic cover that goes over the mount up and out of the way after turning the tube around. Still need to study it a little more.
