not sure what the deal is but the truck started reving like crazy when i tried to stop at an intersection on my way home. the revs go up and down and it was idleing at about 1700 when i got home. it went clear up to 3k a few times though. im thinkin throttle cable sticking.

anyone know of any common problems like this i should look at? thanks

i dont think people like it when i sit at a stop reving @ 3k while the cross in front of me :-laf

mine does the same thing some times..... and I have the 3gsk also.

I'm gonna have it looked at this weekend.

Make sure it's not oil blowin by the turbo bearings causing a potential run-away.

That's what mine did last year.

See if there's any oil in the intercooler boot connected to the turbo.

Just thinking of worst case senerio.

Best wishes

If you don't need control of the vehicle... go to neutral... cut the key... and hope there isn't enough oil feeding it to run with no diesel...

Shift to neutral!!! Then it will run away with no load! But iif its leaking past the turbo there is a bunch of oil thats gotta get burned before it's done.

The only way to put an emer cutoffin it is to stop incoming air.

Had a TD35 one time start running on air cleaner oil and only kept it from destroying itself was to put it up against a tree!

Maybe pinch off the oil line to turbo. How fast does the engine turn in this runaway situation?

Edit: just saw the fire extinguisher idea. Good one now I gotta maake sure I know where that input is for sure. Also I better get an extinguisher with which to do this.

Back to C360 question, is there a manf shutoff for the iar intake?

I have been around one detroit that ran away and it was so scary that no one wanted to go anywhere near it. To stop a runaway, you either need to cut off the oil supply to the turbo or cut off the air supply. Cutting off the oil supply would probably mean taking an axe or something and hacking off the line. Some people have had success with jamming a heavy jacket into the intake but sometimes they will just get sucked through. I have heard of pieces of plywood being used but the air box tended to collapse. Anyways, most people aren't gutsy enough to get anywhere near the engine compartment during a runaway situation. I have heard people discussing whether you could put a waste valve for an rv in the intake line. I don't know whether it would be strong enough but the idea is out there.

The filter box (factory) has that sleeve betwen the fender and the airbox to keep engine compartmanet air out... . That would make it hard to spray with the extinguisher... . but not bad.

LOL Install a Locup switch on the Automatic..... Hold the brakes and hit the button.

Scary is Right... . We had a newly build 855 take off... . It was sitting on just an engine stand running and the whole thing got to vibratiing and floating around on the floor. . We have a (ShutOff Manual) engine manual with a metal cover to throw over the turbo inlet... . Still hard to do when you know 1000lbs of rotating assembly is calling your name... . :D

if you use a dry-chem extinguisher, you would junk the engine anyway... CO2 or halon would be the ticket, not sure about the sudden rush of cold air tho.

We make 1/4 turn aluminum valves at work that would be perfect for this application, as a safety device. Here's a link to a pdf drawing from our catalog.

Jeeze - I remember back when I was messing around a high performance Chevy small block I had just built up for my '50 chevy truck, and managed to knock the throttle return spring off it's anchor...

With an engine screaming like that at full bore, you don't know whether to run, or reach in to try to salvage it! But, I managed to keep my cool, grabbed the linkage and got it under control - but was sorta weak-kneed for a while after... :D

Since then, I keep a Halon fire extinguisher in my truck - but the engine would probably blow before I had a chance to get and use it...
