Howdy, folks. I am getting a Rhino Lining on my 2004. 5 2500 Quad SWB. I plan to add a truck cap at some point (soon). My intent is to leave it on pretty much all the time, but we all know how intentions can change.

The Rhino guy said if it were his truck, and the cap were staying on most of the time, he'd put on some plastic rail caps/covers. If he were going to take the cap off pretty often, he'd have it sprayed. Over the rail spraying is $60 more than under the rail, but cost isn't really a factor here.

I'm just wondering if it makes any real difference. I've never had a decent (non-beat-up) truck or cap before, nor one with a lining. I'd like to do right by this one.

Any opinions or recommendations?

thanks, bws

I am looking at doing this to two of our trucks also. I am waiting ti see the results of others also. I am looking at snug top and don't see a problem with the fit. I might go with line x but not sure yet.

I went over the rail with my Line-X before putting on my Leer 100XL. I wouldn't have done it any other way. Make sure when you install the cap, use the good rubber gasket seal, not that crappy foam stuff. That way it looks good on or off, and removing/reinstalling is a breeze. Here's a pic or three of Adventuremobile1. 0 with over the rail an extra inch or so with cap:

I have my rhino over the rail and have a cap installed. very nice job. I had the installer keep the edge even with where the cap would be so when the cap is installed you can hardly see the rhino. i do take the cap off and on frequently but i liked it better this way than with rail protectors.

I also did what smithinc did on my '01. We taped off the liner (over the rail) so that when the SnugTop went on, you didn't have a thick black line seperating the shell from the truck. SnugTop uses a good neoprene seal and there was never an issue with it leaking or anything. I was taking my shell off and on every month to load my Lance camper. I liked the set up so much, I just did my 04. 5 the same way.

For some reason I can't post one damn photo... I don't know how the gentleman above posted so many!

Howdy, folks. Thanks for all the input. I had the Rhino lining applied yesterday and am very happy with the results. The spousal unit is pleased as well and perhaps now will let me put something in the back of the truck.

I had the lining sprayed over the rails. Having it reach only as far as the edge of a cap makes sense and probably would look better, but I decided to go with the standard that the shop typically does.

I had never actually seen a Rhino lining in person until I went to the shop, so I am going to try and attach some pics to show what the results look like.

Cap?

Pardon my confusion but. . is the "cap" like a topper or tonneau cover? Hard or soft? I am planning to do the same thing and was wondering what the possible complications are with an over the rail spray in lining and a fiberglass tonneau cover. Which should I do first? Do I need the cover prior to the spray in or spray in first then see what fits? Am concerned that the tonneau cover won't fit with the over the rail spray in. Any thoughts? :D

All the pre-planning is making me a little nutz!:-laf

Oh, yeah, I should mention that I'm in New Hampshire, and had the liner sprayed in by the folks at Rhino Linings of Merrimack, http://www.extremepickup.com. The owner, Chris, was helpful and informative. Bonus: he has a deal with Enterprise so that you can rent a car for $15 for the day while yours is being sprayed. This saved me and the spousal unit a lot of hassle ferrying back and forth.
