Rhino on Rocker Panels

I'm also considering having mine done. My truck is silver and would like the color of the Line-X to match, but have heard over time the lighter colors will stain. I try to keep my truck as clean as possible, but would hate to spend the money on it and in a few years it look bad. Jamnram, how does yours look after some miles on it, and has anyone else had good luck with the lighter colored Line-X.

Can anyone chime in that has a lighter color on the bottom? I'd like to know too if color may stain??

I had rocker panels linexed about 2 years ago after whole side of truck got keye down low. Instead of painting I used some of the insurance money to have it done. Turned out good, silver truck, linex was mixed to match the color and then it was painted factory color over the top. The place I got it done was great, the guy let me in the back to help out with it. Before I took it in I took off running boards, mud flaps etc. The only thing I didn't do was remove the rear bumper because I would have had to remove the hitch first. So on the back fenders it stops at the rear bumper, but it doesn't look bad.

Has the silver stained at all??

Here are some pictures of the truck after the Line X treatment. Sorry I wasn't washing the truck in the rain for the occasion. So you'll have to excuse the dirt but it does give it the used look.



I have about 40 pictures the Line X guy took and put on a CD for me taken during various satges of the application, there are huge in size and too big to put on here.



The bumper is home made, not fancy, but very practical and bomb proof. Folks stay clear of me in parking lots.

The bumper was removed, sand blasted, then Line Xed.



No staining thus far of the silver, the crud just washes off.



The inside of the box and the roof of the cap was done several years ago. No issues.



If the surfaces are prepared correctly the Line X will bond permanently. The only way to remove it is burn it off or hammer and chisel.

The line-x dealer I talked to said he can pull all the body plug's and fog the line-x inside the door's to "rust proof" I guess. Is that worth it!

The problem with that idea is that the metal surfaces inside the door or where ever will not be properly prepared. They will have a layer of dust, crud and maybe even some prior form of rust proofing.

The Line X will not bond to those surfaces properly and moiture will get inbetween the Line X and the metal and probably accelerate the rusting process.



The success to any of these coatings is the preparation of the surface to which it is applied. Thats why the odd time on these posts you here of some chap who hates Rhino or Linex because it started to bubble up come, off or whatever. It was not applied correctly.



Buy your local Line X dealer even suggesting to fog the inside of your doors etc to rust proof. I get the distinct impression he doesn't understand the concept of proper surface preparation, and what the coating was designed for.

I would steer clear of this fella at all costs. If you don't think I'am on track with my line of thinking get in touch with Line X's head office on run it by them.

I think Line X would be pleased to here form you, and who this dealer is as they would probably want to either pull his dealership or retrain him.



This is my third truck with spray on linings two with Rhino and this one with Line X. I have had no issues of any description with all three applications.



I have always questioned the the dealer as to how much weight he puts into surface preparartion. If I have any doubts he doesn't even get to see the truck.



Thats the reason I switched from Rhino to Linex. The local Linex dealer is meticulous in preparing the surfaces. He was fussy, and I like fussy. He charges a good dollar for his work but it's worth it. It's done right the first time.

The local Rhino guy was getting sloppy, and taking short cuts to get them in, get'em done, get your money and get them out.

The latest job on the truck as per pictures was $1700. , and I have no regrets. I got what I wanted, the job was done correctly and I'am a happy camper.

Thank's for the advise! He sent me an e-mail with a list of option's that I suggested so I can put together my own package. I agree with you on the spray inside the door's. Prep is the most important step, that's why I'm pulling my door's apart myself to prep the inside w/ POR-15, so I know it was actually done. I am going to pick this guy's brain and see how detailed he get's and if he take's his time. He did tell me and showed picture's of some of his work. He said he does all his masking to get perfect lines. I guess we'll see what he say's! Thank's again.

No problem! As soon as I get my order of POR-15, I'm gonna start to clean up my door's, but I need to get a package price first consisting of the bed and rocker's to be line-xed. I'll keep this updated as best I can.

Well, I got the POR-15 in the mail and I called the Line-x dealer to discuss the price and work to be done. He told me they scuff everything down and grind all loose rust debris first. I told him I was going to do all the rust repair anyway's. So the number's he gave me are:

1. $455. for the bed in black.

2. $440 for rocker's.

3. $140 to go over wheel well's or wheel flare's.

4. $350 extra to color match.



I asked him how long the job would take, and he said, this is a pretty big job, so prep, and painting, it would take about 2-3 day's. So then he told me since there's quite a bit of rust on the pinch weld inside the door, he couldn't spray the inside's of the door's. It'll be just the outside. I don't know if he meant inside the door itself or the door jam! I'm going to have to call back and confirm this and why he can't do the jam/sill area. So I'm looking at right around $1400. What do you guy's think. I really like line-x, and this is the closest dealer that does color match. He had told me they are one of 2 in the state that do color match, so if that's true, I'd kind of be stuck with them. Let me hear some input from other's. Thank's

What I do not hear is any mention of sand blasting and priming any rusted areas. If you take a look at the pictures of mine above you can see what he did around the door bottoms.



There was some sand blasting and priming to be done and the interior had to be protected so it all had to be plastic partitioned off and taped.



So it is very labour intensive and thus pricey. Along with the colour matching 3 coats of a clear UV protectant has to be sprayed on last to stop the fading. At least thats what my fella did to mine.



Use your best judgement as to the competance of your dealer. Make it clear what you want, and expect. Ask alot of guestions as to his methods of surface preparation. And how he plans on protecting other areas of your truck from over spray.



If you can get alook at his work area with some other fellas truck in there that should tell you alot. You could also ask for referrances from past customers.

Just an update. I am planning on pulling my door's off this memorial day weekend and sandblasting the rust and applying the POR-15. I will be taking picture's as I go and doing a before and after. I am trying to find fender flares that don't cost $400 right now. I discussed with the line-x dealer about the issue with not spraying the inside of the door. He said it would cost more to mask off, and since I'm trying to save as much money as possible on this project, I decided not to do the inside. He said he could do it, but it will get expensive. Hopefully I can be of some help with this for other's who have rusty door's. My biggest issue will be figureing out how to post picture's. I'm not really that good with that sort of thing!:-laf Wish me good luck..... with the pic's!!

So far I'am pleased with my installation. No issues with geting the road crud to wash off. And the stones etc that fly up off the wheels pose no issues.

Just curious as what they are charging you. I was quoted $800 but this included the lower door frames and around bottom of doors.

Well my door's are off and gutted. I pulled the rear door's also since I was that far, so I might as well blast and paint them all. I took maybe to many useless pic's, but when I'm done I'll try to organize the important one's and post what I did. I'm hoping to have it all back together tomorrow(saturday),or I should say today already, it's been a long day. Once my door's are all done, I can call Line-x and get a date to drop it off and let them do there thing. Hopefully I remember where all the nut's and bolt's go!:-laf

That look's good. I hope mine turn's out that well. You can't even tell a difference except the texture. I didn't get my door's back on today. The POR-15 takes 3-5 hour's to tack up before a second coat can be applied, so it took way longer than expected. Should be rock hard in the morning and I can get it back together. My door's had a few little holes I didn't notice before. This project kind of suck's, but I'll be glad I did it.
