After thinking I had the cure for my unsatisfactory factory "limited slip" (emphasis on "slip") when I came across a slightly used Powertrax Locker for my Dana 80 for about half price, I spoke with a tech guy at Richmond Gear before attempting the install.

The website says Powertrax units will fit open carriers as well as most factory limited slip carriers. I misunderstood that apparently, though. Turns out they DO make them to fit various factory limited slip carriers, but it is a different Powertrax model than for the open carrier for any given axle. They do not make a Powertrax unit for any Dana 80 limited slip carrier; only for the Dana 80 factory open carrier.

So much for the "do it yourself" aspect of the Powertrax in my particular case. I will now need to find a different open carrier and have the gear lash professionally setup to install this Powertrax.

At least that question was answered before I dropped my carrier out. I do still want to get this Powertrax in my axle. The only other sort-of-available locker is the Detroit, of which I am a huge fan, but it costs alot and must be machined from a Dana 70HD unit (somehow?) to fit a Dana 80.

I'm not interested in rebuilding or restacking my factory limited slip clutch packs. It would still be just a limited slip and leave me stuck any time I got one wheel in the air or on really slippery stuff.

Does anyone know a good source for finding a used Dana 80 35-spline open carrier for my 3. 54 gear ratio? It would be nice to get this done before winter is over... I see Dana 80 limited slip units on ebay fairly often, but haven't seen an open carrier lately. I sure don't want to even ask what a dodge dealer gets for one.
