I'm thinking of going for this upgrade to help with a buffer on the rear tire and wheel weight when pulling the 5th wheel. Has anyone done it and how did it turn out?

Which combination of tire and wheel did you use?

Thanks Ken

I run 19. 5's on my 3500's and 5500 trucks... mine are all steel wheels... we hate the ride, love the life and low cost of the tires... .

We deal with a vendor in Europe and when the Euro was down we connected with a steel wheel manufacturer... had enough wheels built for our trucks and shipped them over with some other goods... .

Harsher ride for sure... . we get up to 100K miles on front steer tires and almost that on rear retreads... on the rear we're using the same tire as UPS from Bandag here in Spokane and the front steer tires are a new rib tire by either Michelin or Bridgestone...

We generally keep a truck for 500K miles and are looking for exceptional life, low cost per mile and the extra margin of safety... we get that with the 19. 5" tires.

Ken, here is what I have. . they are on back order right now at Ricksons. . These are forged Aluminum Rims, and Michelin 245/70R-19. 5" . . 12 ply "F" rated... . 4080# @95 psi

I have a 09 3500 now and the Auto is a little high geared. I am down to 9/32 wear, been on 5 years during summers, and I might go to 225/70R-19. 5" as a replacement next year. .

These tires are harsher ride solo but very well mannered towing heavy. I have these for summer then switch to stock tires and rims for winter when not towing.

When I was looking 2-3yrs ago Rickson had a minimum 6 week wait. I went with Aluminum Vision 81 rims from Les Schwab and Toyo 608Z 19. 5's. This was a 2 day turn around. Ride is a little rougher empty. Handles great loaded.

I run 245/70-19. 5 toyo 608z's on a f450 and you need at least a 6. 75 rim width or you will take the centers out real fast. They also LOVE rocks and when you get tired of digging them out and run them it will ruin your casings-making them uncappable. Also on the f450 at 12k lightweight you don't get any miles on them either. I went thru the stockers and a set of the 608z's in 65k.

I have had my steel Ricksons on for several months now. Found them on Craigs(5 wheels and tires, 225/70/19. 5 Good for a year) for $1200. Will up one size to 245 Bridgestones load F when I wear out the 225s.

Being forewarned about premature wear if you do not run proper air pressure, I run 70 lbs in the front(constant) and 80 to 100 in the rear depending on load.

Yes the ride is a little stiffer, but the peace of mind is priceless.

FYI: A new Bridgestone 245/70/19. 5 load F dealer cost is $221. They have 19/32 tread depth. They will carry over 4000# per tire. More tire than I have truck... ... ... ... ... .

I like 'em!
