ya, and if you look at the 4500 and 5500 they tow even less. These trucks stay under 26K GCWR so drivers don't need a cdl to operate them. This means that regardless of the trucks capability tow rating equals 26K-weight of the truck.
Sorry, that's not actually true. DOT enforcement officers have no idea what the manufacturer says the GCWR of a truck is and do not care. Factory brochures or builder's guide specs are not available to them in the field and are not VIN specific anyway so they are meaningless to DOT cops.
What they look at is the GVWR posted on the VIN sticker of truck and trailer, add the two together, and if either that figure or actual scale weight exceeds 26k, a CDL Class A is required.
