Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Rifle slings for offhand shooting support

I realize some type of rest is way more stable than offhand shooting, and I did get a bipod for the new rifle. However..... A sling also came with the package. I know the sling can be wrapped around an arm and pulled tight to steady the rifle, but my question is: For a right handed shooter, should the sling wrap around the right or left arm??

Also, while I am here, is there a TDR equivalent for guns? I am getting interested in long-range target shooting, and also setting up an arsenal for home-defense.

Left arm... should create a small noose loop at the front of the sling to cinch the left arm into. Of course, this is for target shooting... for 'snap shooting' you should do one half wrap with the left forearm to stabilize the muzzle and go for it! I even used the 'half wrap' sling in fire fights in Viet Nam 40 years ago to very good effect!

The M-1 Garand had such a strap but that is not the way we used it. I have a black nylon strap on one of my muzzle loaders that is made the same way and can be used like that. All I remember is that we just lenghtened the strap and put the left elbow inside it but not wrapped around the arm. bg

Using a Rifle Sling



Here is an article by Maj. John Plaster, some good information (short)

When I was out hunting I would use a form of the hasty sling.

When target shooting at the club with the M-1 I would use the deliberate sling. I could (amazingly enough) even it the target at 600 yrds:-laf:-laf

When I shoot competitions i use the half wrap. It allows you to aquire additional targets quickly and i have used it succesfully out to 900yds. the advantage of not using the m1 stile competition slings is you can use the half wrap very quickly in the field on the hunt.
