TDR issue 46

What happend?

OK, I brought this subject up before, never got a conclusive suggestion as to the cause or cure - so will try again...

Ever since this board went to the current level of software, the right side of my display is extended off the screen and not visible - this frequently causes the loss of text or control functions that lie in the "missing" area - and I am unable to include "smilies" in my text simply by clicking on them, even the ones still clearly and entirely remaining on my screen.

The involved area is only about a quarter inch band vertically down the right side, and obviously involves more than just inability to read that area, since I am also losing ability to click on smilies as well - even in THIS message area, where the smilies are WELL within the borders, they still will not apply by clicking on them - there's some connection between the lost screen area and other "normal" control function.

I'm running a 15 inch multi-sync CRT monitor, and a 2. 6 ghz P4 PC with XP operating system - and high-speed DSL. At first, this effect was only about 50% of the time, and usually occurred whenever a too-wide picture was posted, which seemed to buump my display into a different display mode, and it wouldn't return to normal without a reboot - now it does it all the time, tho I haven't made ant related changes I am aware of.

I've tried various different screen resolutions and settings as provided in XP's control panel, but no help there - the type and image area changes - but the noted effect is still there regardless.

This is the ONLY board affected this way, and even here, the REST of the screen is completely normal - it just seems THIS board is seen by my PC as a 75 CPL or so display, rather than 80 CPL...

I seem to be the only user affected, judging by lack of similar comments - anyone have any ideas?

What resolution are you running at? You need to be running at a minimum of 800x600 otherwise it will be wider than the screen although you should get a scroll bar that you can scroll back and forth to see the right side. The smilies not working would have to be a problem with Javascript. Can you use the pull down menus at the top of the pages? They run on javascript as well. Once you change your screen resolution you need to refresh the screen so that it will reformat to your screen width. If your window is sized larger than your screen (ie - you can't see the vertical scroll bar) you can click on the icon in the upper left of the window and click on maximize - that will size the window to your full desktop size.

A too wide picture used to cause the screen to go wider than 800x600 but that shouldn't happen any more. I modified the software to resize pics that are too large for that screen size to size them small enough to fit on an 800x600.

STEVE - I normally operate at 800x600 - have tried other, higher resolutions, but the effect stays the same. All other functions are normal, pull-down menus work fine - only the missing (off-screen) band and non-functioning smilies are affected...

Can you take a screen shot and email it to me at -- email address removed -- ? Just hit your print screen button and then bring up windows paint and click on edit->paste and then save that file and send it to me as an attachment.

I may have finally fixed it~

I went to NVIDIA and downloaded their latest driver upgrade, and all seems well so far - let's keep our fingers crossed... :) Oo. :D

(see, even the smilies work now!)

(SIGH!)

OK, final verdict - I only THOUGHT the new driver download fixed the problem...

FACT IS, what was REALLY the problem, was my Zonealarm firewall popup ad blocker - apparently, it sees some of the various elements of the TDR webpages as popup ads, and blocks them from loading properly - and some of the links such as smilies along with them. When I had downloaded the new vidio driver, I had disabled ZA, so everything worked fine - as soon as I again reset ZA, my "problem" returned.

The "fix" is to turn ZA off - at least when entering TDR - but I sure do hate the ads that pop up without ZA to shut them off...

We do not have any pop up ads on the TDR site at all. If you are getting pop up ads when you are browsing the TDR then your system is infected with sypbots. Even those ZA blocks those when it's running it's slowing your PC down because it tries to open them then ZA shuts them down. Zonealarm causes more problems than any other single program for honest webmasters out there - I can't stand that product! Go to http://www.ad-aware.com , download, install, and run it. When you run it first update the definition files and then scan your system and delete everything it finds. Then go to http://www.safe-networking.org and download spy s&d and do the same. I recommend running those weekly to clean your system off. Spybots are becoming a bigger issue than viruses these days.

I wouldn't recomend turning off ZA. If you disable your firewall your system will be vulnerable to attack. You should be able to just disable the ZA ad blocker through the ZA control panel.
