I had the opportunity to follow behind the cummins in traffic & parking lots tonite. I was riding the Wing, with a 1/2 height helmet on so I could hear. You can hear the Monica whistle from both the rear & front/side. The 4" straight thru, with just the resonator/muffler sounds great. You can hear the turbo spool up & then come back down.

One of the first mods to my truck was the removal of the silencer ring. Definite audio improvement. No perceptible change in performance, though. Image of ring installed and image of turbo with no silencer ring.

I had the airbox out while installing an Amsoil air filter and noticed the small oval
tube connecting the airbox to the fender looked like a restriction so I removed it and
re-installed the airbox assembly. Now I can
really hear the turbo spool up and down, and the sound while going thru the gears brings a large smile upon my face! I don't know whether the Amsoil filter or the oval tube removal made the biggest difference in sound
but it sure does work! Again, seat of the pants difference is negligible. The stock paper filter is pretty thick, and probably deadens a lot of the intake noise.

I personally do not think that removal of the
silencer ring creates any anoying high pitched noise; in my opinion, it sounds great! I have driven to Austin and back, about 3 hours each way, and never once did I
wish that I had the ring with me to re-install it. #ad
Maybe some folks are sensitive to that frequency. At least give it a try; next time you are next to a Power
Choke, you will want to have as much turbo
noise as you can... those PSD's hardly emit anything from their turbos, sound-wise.

If any of you don't understanding what I am talking about, next time you see a Kenworth or other large 18 wheeler accellerate thru the gears, listen for the turbo... that is the sound my engine now makes. #ad

Just got back from the coast and I heard no unpleasant sounds from my rig at all. Even at 85mph down I-40,my rig had the straight piped rumble along with the whine of the turbo that I forgot about until it spooled up and down with speed changes.

I found out on my trip that my speedo is 10% off. So I had to add 10% to my odo to get the correct fuel mileage and that was 23. 2mpg I don't think thats to shabby.

I have noticed after I removed the ring, when I start to slow down from 35-50 mph, I hear the deep howl. Is this normal? I thought that maybe a clamp had come loose from the inter cooler, but all was tight and hoses were fine. It has been 1 week since I removed the ring and this is the first time that I noticed the howl. . I just wanted to make sure that this was normal. Any ideas. .

Thanks
Rick

Just come back from a long trip, first one after removing the ring. It was a great sound the whole trip, pulling hills or running flat. I think the ring has a perminent place, hanging on a nail in my garage!!! Even the family gets a kick out of hearing the turbo whistle. The only problem that I have is that the turbo wont whistle at low speeds(15-20 mph). #ad

I recently let the better half drive my truck to my brothers house and I rode shotgun. I heard coolest sound come from my truck when we got there. As soon as she shut the engine off I was already out of the truck getting my daughters bicycle out and the sound that was coming from the tail pipe sounded like one of Art Arfon's jet engines spooling down. That's the coolest sound that I've heard other than the engine running.

Anyone else that is straight piped heard this cool sound from the turbo?

No wonder you can hear your turbo spool down!
I read your sig; straightpiped! #ad
Cool. . I'd like to do that to mine.

Now you have to get someone to drive your Ram
past you as you're standing off to the side!
Just putting around slowly in first, and only
using enough throttle to bring the revs up
some. Sounds cool!

In your sig you mention the driving light relay has been removed. Must be something I
missed in a past issue of the TDR. I take
it that is how you get the driving lights to
come on even with the brights on? Is there
anyplace I can get the info to do this to my
2001? thanx. .

The ring was the first thing to go in mine. I like the way it sounds. When I had my straight pipe on the truck sounded awesome to everyone except the local police. Has to put a muffler back on. I went with the Flowmaster and still have a little sound. I might try the straight pipe when I can get it done in 4". Might not be so loud. Even withthe Flowmaster I still hear the turbo wind through the exhaust pipe. Sound cool runnin down the interstate at about 75 or 80. #ad

Can the ring be put back in place if you didn't like the extra noise? Or do you have to damage it to get it out? #ad

Well, I went and done it, I took the ring out. Thanks Chris, for the picture you posted. That made it real easy. I haven't heard the difference cause I didn't even get to crank it. It was raining cats and dogs. It was still very wet this morning, so I didn't drive it cause I wants it to look perdy in HELL!

I also found the boot from the airbox to the fender not istalled correctly. The boot has a lip on it to keep it tucked inside the airbox. The boot has to be installed through the airbox out to the fender - but that wasn't done. It was just stuck in the fender hole and pushed up to the outer surface of the airbox. I corrected it.

Does anyone know of some modifications being done in this area (besides the Psychotty)?

JyRo,

I just checked out my boot from the fender to the airbox and it is just as you described. There is about an inch gap between the boot and the airbox - I wonder if this is normal. In a previous posting, somone removed the boot altogether. I like the idea of the psychotty, I just can't get past the drilling a 4" hole part yet! #ad

Some people drill holes in the bottom of the box to let in air. I thought about it, but I wanted the benefit of reducing the EGT's when pulling my trailer.
