Re: fender air boot/air box gap.
Yep, they build 'em that way. Put the boot in the air box on a '94 gas 1/2 ton I owned once. Transmitts a really annoying vibration into the cab. You probably can't hear it over the Cummins. #ad
BOMB on!

I do not remebr who or why but I do remeber being told that there is that gap for a reason and by installing it into the box completly defeated the purpose. Took mine out also so it does not matter on my truck.

I got to drive mine and it's incrementally louder, not extremely though. #ad

Scooby, I feel the same as you. I'd bet the Scotty works as advertised but I just cant drill that big of a hole in my truck. #ad

RHARVEY, I don't see how putting holes in the bottom of your airbox can effect the EGT's. Can you explain it to me? #ad
The hole is so big already, I don't see much benefit to adding holes at all.

Extreme1, you're right, I get absolutely no extra noise in my truck. I doubt I would even with a gas truck. #ad

MCrossley, the way the snorkle is designed, I'd lay money on the fact it was designed to go inside the airbox. I bet DC developed some problems with it (maybe rattling like Extreme1 said) and found that leaving it off reduced customer complaints. If it was a rattle, it must have been the snorkle rattling in the airbox. That would explain why they leave it out of the airbox at assembly.

I believe it was either Bill Stockard or Joe George that brought up the reason the snorkle is not connected to the air box. Their feeling was the gap provided a means to slip something rigid between them in the (unlikely but possible) event of Diesel engine run on. The rigid piece placed in front of the air box intake port is intended to block intake air thus, effectively killing the engine.

TLippy was the person that posed the question in TDR issue 24 (Idle Clatter page 93) as to whether the snorkle should be connected or not. After investigation into this Jim Anderson offered speculation on the subject further stating it was more or less a non-issue.

I connected my snorkle several times when trying out different panel filters and NEVER experienced any vibration whatsoever. In fact, the snorkle fit very snugly to the inside of the air box. No performance gain either.

In your sig you mention the driving light relay has been removed. Must be something I
missed in a past issue of the TDR. I take
it that is how you get the driving lights to
come on even with the brights on? Is there
anyplace I can get the info to do this to my
2001? thanx. .

Chris

[/B][/QUOTE] Chris it's real simple, there is a relay box on the drivers side fender well. Look in it and you will see the Fog lights relay. Pull it out and find the terminal numbers #3 and #5 on the bottom of the relay to find where you need to put the jumper wire. Crimp 2 blade connectors to a 1" piece of 14ga. wire and plug the jumper into the #3 and #5 terminals and walla!

Well, thanks to all of you nice folks, I had to go and take the baffle out of mine the other night. I just love the sweet sound of that turbo!!

Uh, not to be a party pooper, but has anyone considered any EPA problems with removing the silencer ring?

Here's the scoop: This sounds like a great idea, so I e-mailed Cummins about it (whether it could damage the engine in any way). They quickly said it wouldn't damage the engine, then proceeded to give an entire second page of possible EPA violations by doing it. Said a possible $25,000 fine. Hmmm, louder turbo, $25000, louder turbo, $25000.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid for nothing, but even the CHANCE of getting slapped with that kind of fine is uncomfortable.

What y'all think?

In my part of California, there is enough milk trucks, log trucks, cement trucks, and a number of other big rigs that I don't think that they would even look in my direction. Here they use the Jakes brakes with no problems and they are alot louder than the sound of the whistle of my turbo. .

I've got a friend who is an ex rally mechanic. He gets 350hp+ out of 4 cylinder gas engines so I value what he says. We were installing my PE last weekend and I asked him about removing the ring. His thought was that, if anything, the removal of the ring would increase air turbulence entering the turbo thus producing a decrease in performance. Just a thought . . .

How's that saying go...
If its too loud... your too old!! #ad

I've had mine out for over a year without so much as a thought to re-install it. BUT. . like most things. . its personnal preference. And different sounds bother different people. I'm thinking about installing a Horton because I'm sick of hearing that damn fan, especially running empty at 60-70MPH. . When I hit 75-80 it seems to quiet down. Unfortunately I doubt that excuse would get me out of a ticket. .

I also had the same thoughts, since there is cavities behind where the ring goes. Any of you brain types have any thoughts on the subject? I will be putting a straight pipe in when the cat falls off, and if I need to re-install the ring to cut the turberlance, it will go back in.
Whats some thoughts and facts on the subject.....

I emailed Holset to ask if the silencer ring would cause any problems with the air flow and this is the email that I got back this morning. .

Dear Rick,
The silencer ring in the compressor housing has no baring on the function of the turbocharger. It was merely installed to reduce noise emitted by the turbocharger.
Regards,
Carl Gross

So with this in mind, the ring will stay out #ad

O. k. . . so I'll try it. Question: When I was looking at the ring I tried to budge the retaining clip and it seemed firmly attached in its groove. Is there a suggested method for removing the clip?

To do this the easy way ... use two small screwdrivers ... you can do it with one. Pry out on the beveled edge of the snap ring with one screwdriver ... insert the other screwdriver under the snap ring and ease it on out the bore. This comes out REAL easy.

Then as someone else posted ... give it to your significant other for a cookie cutter!
