Ripped off on fuel filter change???

My vehicle maintenance is covered by my employer, so I still let my Dealer do the work. So far, I haven't noticed anything really out of the ordinary. Oil changes cost about $45 bucks with a filter change. Today, I had him change the fuel filter, as I have just under 22k on my original one. That was an additional 47 bucks for the filter and 48 dollars for labor to do it. Is this high? I am thinking about going elsewhere for maintenance anyway, but just wanted some input. The local Cummins place here in town gets 85 bucks an hour plus parts. Didn't really know who else to look towards that would really know my engine. Any of you guys close to Toledo want the business? #ad

That is the same price I was quoted to have it done at my dealer. It can be done for $16. 80 and 15 minutes of my time. That is the cost for the filter from Cummins.

I went down to my local auto parts store and got a WIX filter for $15. 01 delivered, again maybee 15 min. install (2min work, 13min prime and stareing at the engine)

I'll 2nd Mr. B - spent more time trying to find a 'hose/funnel' to place under the water drain than anything else.

It's a piece of cake to do it yourself.

Of course this is on a 24V - 12V is a whole different story.

i went down to my local Ace Hardware and brought a two foot piece (cut to desired length) of tubing and a connector, about a buck, and extended the drain to below the axel to facilate draining water or the whole filter. One tywrap to hold it in place.

Here's what you need to do... Go to Cummins and get some fuel filters. Last time I bought one, it was like 12 bucks for the FS1268 for my 2001. Install it yourself, it is real easy, especially on the 97 and up trucks. The 00-01 trucks are the easiest, only takes about 2 minutes to do.

For the 97-99 trucks, use a 9/16" socket to loosen the nut on the top of the canister. Be sure to drain the fuel out first. After you remove the canister and old filter, install the new one using the new gaskets and o-rings. Be sure to put a little diesel on the new rubber parts so you get a good seal. Then just re-install the canister, prime the system, and your done! #ad
On 00-01 trucks, use a 1 1/8" socket to remove the black plastic cap on the fuel filter canister. Be sure to drain a little fuel out first. The filter will come out attched to the lid, which makes this so easy. Just pop the old filter and 0-ring off, put the new stuff on, prime the system, and you're done! Doesen't get any easier than that.

Just a note, on the 00 trucks, the fuel filter lid still had a 1/2" square drive in the top of the lid. DO NOT use a 1/2" drive tool to remove the lid. The plastic can crack very easy, especially when installing the lid. Use a 1 1/8" socket instead.

Thanks for the input, guys. The only saving grace, I guess, is that it really wasn't me that got raped, it was the company I work for. I went back and got the receipt. Actual charges were $45. 50 labor and $47. 30 for the filter for a total of $92. 80 #ad


I guess I can do it myself. I was just sort of enjoying the fact that for the last 7 months, since I got the new truck, I haven't had to pay for the maintenance.

On a different note, it shows that they charged for 12 quarts of oil. My owners manual says 10 in the engine and 1 for the filter. Doesn't 10+1 still equal 11. They charged $8. 51 for the oil filter and $1. 34 for each quart of oil plus $15. 36 labor plus a $0. 25 haz. waste disposal for a total of $40. 20 on the oil change. Not too bad I guess. But they are saying that it took 3 times as long to change the fuel filter as it did to drain the engine oil, change the filter, refill it and lube the truck.

I too was raped! $48 bucks for a $18 dollar filter is a crime in itself. Not to mention the labor cost of nearly another $50.

Being the cover was plastic . . I was a little reluctant so I brought it to the dealer. When they quoted the $98 for the change . . so I just bought the filter. Then I found out the same filter costs about 18 @ geno's I really swole up.

Took my time . . already had the inch LB torq wrench. I just had to buy that socket. Don't be tempted to put the 1/2 drive ratchet wrench in the center hole . . The documents mention you can split the cover. They recommend the socket . . 1 1/4" 9 point?? Something like that.

Once the top was off . . the filter just snapped out and the new one snapped back in place. New O-Ring included . . tightened to 25 in lbs? It's stamped on the cover.

Next one will be bought in advance from genos . . and since I have the process down . . the next change shouldn't take longer than 10 mins.

Mr. B . . Glad Im not the only one with "Starin @ my Cummins" syndrom. What is it? Is there some time delay switch that keeps us from closing the hood? And since the hood needs to stay open during that delay . . we just keep lookin for about 10 mins? I just don't know.

I checked the dealer out first ($47. 5o for just the filter)then went to our local 'Big Rig' Pro-Fleet lube. They installed a Fleetguard fuel filter in my Ram for $11. 50 plus tax, including labor.

This seems to be a pretty common thing at the dealers. Same happened to me and I've seen many other posts along the same lines... 12 qts. in an 11 qt. system. Its the new math.....
